More than three years after her firing from The Mandalorian, actress Gina Carano is opening up about her dismissal from the series, as well as the lawsuit she has subsequently brought against Disney and Lucasfilm.
Carano, who played Rebel shock trooper-turned-New Republic marshal Cara Dune on the flagship Disney+ series, was let go in February 2021, after she’d begun making headlines for her social media activity. At the time, Carano had been accused of being anti-trans (in part by posting the words “boop/bop/beep” as her “pronouns” in her Twitter bio, seen by many as a display of mockery toward the transgender community), racist, anti-mask (during the COVID-19 pandemic), anti-vaccination and a potential supporter of the attempted Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Not long before her firing, Carano had published an Instagram post that was interpreted to be an antisemitic defense of Nazis (stating that Jews in World War II were not beaten by German soldiers but “by their neighbors”).
In announcing Lucasfilm’s decision to sever ties with Carano, a rep for the company called Carano’s recent social media posts “abhorrent and unacceptable.”
“I just laid down and cried and cried,” Carano said of the Mandalorian firing in a new Hollywood Reporter interview. “I curled into a fetal position. It’s not that I didn’t think that something like that could happen. It was that I couldn’t imagine they would put out this horrendous statement about me after working with me — the most powerful entertainment company in the world saying that about me.”
Carano has since sued Disney and Lucasfilm for discrimination and wrongful termination, and confirmed to THR that X owner Elon Musk is footing her legal bills. Though Carano has not directly communicated with Musk since her complaint was filed on Feb. 6, she called his financial assistance “pretty incredible” and claimed Musk is “using his money to fight massive injustice battles.”
“You become unhirable,” she continued. “And then it becomes OK for other people to disrespect you. And then you’re just carrying around this disrespect, and you’re shouldering all this shame, and it affects your physicality, your mentality. You’re just kind of hopeless. So to be able to fight back — it makes me feel like, ‘OK. That feels good.’ ”
Carano took particular issue with the pushback she received for posting “boop/bop/beep” in her Twitter bio, words she said were meant to be “cute, like R2-D2.” Instead, Lucasfilm and Disney allegedly had Carano participate in what she calls a “reeducation camp” with GLAAD representatives, followed by media training.
“Boop/bop/beep? Seriously?” Carano said. “This was the start of the end for me? A 20-year career, the blood, sweat and tears of fighting? I never compromised myself for a job. I never ended in a bad situation where I did anything inappropriate. I had a clean and clear climb to where I got to and was going to just keep going. And boop/bop/beep was that harmful?
“You won’t find a perfect person in me, but you will find a person who was doing her absolute best under one of the most aggressive unnecessary cancellations in Hollywood history,” she continued. “This has been one of the toughest growth spurts of my life and I don’t plan on wasting what I have learned… I’m thinking about clearing my name. I’m thinking about finally being healthier and having this monkey off my back and telling my story and just getting on with my life. Finally.”
TVLine has reached out to Disney and Lucasfilm for comment.
Its crazy to me that someone who has an amazing job on a major piece of IP cared more about punching down than just keeping her job and fame.
The level of disconnect she has that she doesn’t think she should be held accountable for the words she types……
Amen. I thought Gina was great on the show, and I really liked her character. But she brought this all on herself. Is there anyone left who can just own up to their mistakes and give a sincere apology? That’s the way to get your career back. Not a whiny lawsuit pretending you’re a victim.
That’s the thing right there. It’s that she doesn’t or won’t understand what she did wrong. I understand it was meant to be cute. But in the wake of the outcry, instead of a simple “Sorry, my bad” she went the opposite direction and ran to the people who have given us Ladyballers. I’m tired of the constant need to fight.
Also she wasn’t actually under contract. She was in the middle of renewal negotiations since Disney was going to give her a brand new show. Then she started posting stuff again after Disney had already asked her to stop. Management just said forget it and walked away from the table.
I’m pretty liberal, and don’t agree with her on things, but I’m starting to realize that firing people for these differences of opinion is a slippery slope. She said beep/bop and doesn’t like the vaccine or mask? I don’t like the last one myself. I don’t want to find myself fired one day because my Trump-loving boss decides that my personal views are too wild for the company.
While her Jewish comment is a bit much, I don’t have a huge issue with anything else she said, despite not agreeing with it all. As long as she doesn’t actually bully trans people, not agreeing with them isn’t a crime. Sorry to burst the bubble of the 20 somethings who live on Twitter.
It was a lot, tho. And it’s the white supremist flirtations that get me the most… She was being really toxic and could have stopped when they asked her to.
And she wasn’t under contract, she wasn’t yet signed for the leading role in a new series. And quite frankly, I’m not sure they didn’t regret hiring her and her poor acting skills in the first place.
(Also, she’s the one that lives on “twitter”; she’s in bed with Musk, now. I know you’re not 20 something, but Twitter ain’t exactly a liberal hotspot if it ever was.)
But I agree. People shouldn’t be fired just for different opinions. But when you’re pushing such a fringe, toxic, racist agenda all the time…why would a company want you representing them publicly again?
She wasn’t fired though. She was not signed to a new contract.
You do not have free speech rights with an employer.
.
Or a perspective employer.
.
You never did.
.
Freedom of speech is between you and the government, not you and an employer. Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence in any case.
.
There’s also the right of freedom of association. An employer doesn’t have to associate with you if they don’t like your speech.
Actually her Jewish comment was fine. It’s historical fact that normal Germans turned on other normal Germans, this included German Jews turning on German Jews. That’s what happens when you have extremist groups who use fear as a weapon as it drives the human trait of self preservation.
She was just drawing a comparison to the situation where far left groups like the trans lobby have created this situation where people are so scared of being turned on and labelled fat right that they will stay silent or even turn on people just because they don’t agree with the extreme agendas even when that person is left of centre. They are basically playing a game of division with the masses.
Her bigger problematic comments weren’t really this which was actually a good analogy when people know their history and aren’t looking to be professionally offended or even her calling out the ridiculousness of pronouns in bios and the bullying that goes on to get people to do it but more the conspiracy things around COVID or stolen elections
🤡
And just where did you find all these “historical facts”? She was trying to tell the world that Germans didn’t beat Polish, Hungarian, Russian, etc., Jews. It was only the local citizens of those countries. If you believe that, I have this bridge in Brooklyn I’ve been trying to sell for awhile.
I see you shine with idiocy. 🤡🤡🤡
Your comment is offensive on many levels, but I’ll narrow it down to two:
Were you referring to non-Jewish Germans when you say “normal Germans?” What a poor choice of words in the event you weren’t trying to be offensive.
The second instance is your use of the term “trans lobby.” Where is this so-called “lobby” and where can we send contributions in their support?
She behaved in an inappropriate, bigoted way and her actions had consequences.
She literally linked to news sites run by white supremist organizations. It’s no the beep boop, honey, it’s you being toxic as hell. Endlessly. She could have just STOPPED with the crazy anti-mask, anti-vax “the gym is my church” and white supremist bs and she didn’t. Nobody owes you endless employment.
Or quality well paid employment.
The Mandalorian has plummeted in quality since her firing. Not sure if those two things are related or not. But Man has that show gone down hill.
I’m honestly so glad she’s gone. The show is MUCH better without her meh acting skills. It’s improved a lot.
Clear her name? Ha! She chose to post ignorant comments that violated company policy. Her firing was justified.
She really wants everyone to think that beep/bop/boop single handedly brought down her career (not remotely true but go off sis) Jokes like that are on par with ‘i identify as a flight helicopter lolol’ no-one has ever lost their career over Boomer humor. And from what I understand she wasn’t under contract nor is anyone obligated to hire her if they don’t want to. Lastly anyone who wants to ‘clear their name’ should steer clear of associating with Musk, but these two are very fitting together. Two people who really delude themselves into thinking they are fighting the good fight but are actually among the worst types of people on the planet
I dunno man, even if it was supposed to be “cute” it was still mocking and a dog whistle to “identify” as a droid or whatever. It’s her commitment to needing to be mean-spirited towards a certain group that got her fired, Disney is a private company and I’m sure there’s wording in her contract that applies.
The mocking was deserved though. She was effectively being bullied to put pronouns into her bio. I actually applaud her for having some guts to stand up to the trans lobby as most are scared to and the fact people just bow to them is damaging to everyone including trans people
The whole point of pronouns in bios originally was so trans people weren’t misgenderd and pushing everyone to only causes people to subconsciously ignore it thus more likely to misgenderd trans people.
Your comment deserves to be mocked.
This, coming from a closeted gay man.
If the boo boop whatever was the ONLY thing, I could see it as a very tasteless joke. But still something that shouldn’t have been posted
Sounds like she’s trying to say that’s the only reason they fired her.
It’s like she went and hit all the “I’m a crappy person” buttons and thinks people are only mad about the pronouns.
Sorry G, I was a big fan since you were Jet. You aren’t a great actress but not everyone is. You lost me completely with your hateful and flat out dangerous stuff. Vaccines have been in use for centuries. Would America exist if Washington had not made all his soldiers take small pox vaccine? They clobbered the English. Because THEY were sick with the pox. And now smallpox and measles and other deadly maiming diseases are making a comeback because of you and people like you. See quote at end of my comment.
It is all your own fault. You were warned and given a chance to clean up. You slapped that away and somehow expected to keep your job with a company that is super vigilant about their image.
** from History dot com **
When George Washington took command of the Continental Army in 1775, America was fighting a war on two fronts: one for independence from the British, and a second for survival against smallpox. Because Washington knew the ravages of the disease firsthand, he understood that the smallpox virus, then an invisible enemy, could cripple his army and end the war before it began.
That’s why Washington eventually made the bold decision to inoculate all American troops who had never been sickened with smallpox at a time when inoculation was a crude and often deadly process. His gamble paid off. The measure staved off smallpox long enough to win a years-long fight with the British. In the process, Washington pulled off the first massive, state-funded immunization campaign in American history.
Thanks for the great timely knowledge drop.
Good luck w/that. Her name is garbage, just like those she supports.
“Well, well, well if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions.”
No matter what happens i will still support this person 0%
TVLine and other sites need to stop giving her a platform.
“Why are they so MEAN to meeeeee?”
BECAUSE YOU WERE MEAN TO OTHER PEOPLE!
It’s not hard to figure out (though it apparently is)!
How can she “clear her name” when she said what she said? You can’t say something bigoted and then claim you aren’t a bigot. It just doesn’t work that way.
So if the writers decided to write her character off would she still be able to sue?
Her coworkers initially saved her job, but she couldn’t keep her mouth shut to keep her job?! And now she’s upset?! AND musk is footing her legal bills?! I liked her but her support of Jan 6th was out of line.
I like how the headline says Carano is breaking her silence. That’s what got her fired to begin with. I don’t when folks are going to figure out that shutting up is always an option.
Weird. I didn’t see an apology or admitting she could have done things differently.
