A knife attack in Mulhouse, eastern France, on Saturday left one person dead and two police officers seriously wounded during a demonstration, local prosecutor Nicolas Heitz told newsagency AFP. Three other officers sustained minor injuries.
The attacker, a 37-year-old man on France’s terror prevention watchlist (FSPRT), was under judicial supervision and house arrest, with an expulsion order from the country, according to union sources. One officer suffered a carotid artery injury, while another was wounded in the thorax.
The attack occurred around 4:00 pm during a protest in support of Congo. A security perimeter was established, and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau was expected to visit the scene.
Mulhouse mayor Michèle Lutz described the incident as an act of "horror" and said it was being investigated as a terror attack. France’s national anti-terror prosecutors (PNAT) have taken over the case.
