Yubasana asks Big B how he prepped for the monologue in Shoojit Sircar’s film Pink.
Big B narrates, “First of all, it is my job. If I am not able to perform, they would take someone else. With this fear, we do what we are asked to do. But talking about the monologue, when it is a long monologue, unka vichaar ek hai. If you understand that, then you go with the flow. During Pink, Shoojit, he would involve everyone in the scene. There were 6-7 cameras. He got everyone’s reaction and it not only becomes easy in editing but also everyone is involved. The monologue was the film’s theme ‘No’. When a woman says ‘No’ it means ‘No’. In the film, it is shown, when the opposition lawyer would present the case, he would come up with all the arguments and I would just say no and sit. The girls think that they hired me and I am not fighting for them. I had then told Shoojit da, that this man is just saying no and sitting, so can we take that word and build a monologue around it? That’s how the scene was built. People should remember the dialogue. Most important shot from the film after that is my favourite, where a lady constable comes and shakes my hand after the courtroom drama. I felt the film’s theme has been justified that a lady constable also agreed to it. That was the most important scene for me I feel.”

Yubasana asks Big B about her collaboration with Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen.
Big B replies, “I have been fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to work with the stalwarts of film industry. Satyajit Ray made a film and I did a commentary. Jaya did work with him. I have been to his house and he would meet very nicely. I have been to his place a few times and got to see where he would work. Jaya would complain, wives complain that we don’t keep things in place. In Manik’s da’s (Satyajit Ray’s nickname) house, you won’t believe, you wouldn’t find anything in place…sab faila rehta tha. But whenever, he needed anything, he would get it. Whenever Jaya would complain, I would give her Manik da’s example that look at him, he is a genius but everything is unkempt. He is a true genius.”

For the unversed, Big B had narrated for Satyajit Ray’s Bhuvan Shome film. He also narrated how the filmmaker would edit films in those days. Big B says, “It was his genius mind who knew where to cut a film in such a tedious way of editing technique in those days.”
