Apple CEO Tim Cook was recently asked whether there was room for innovation in future iPhone designs during the company’s latest earnings call. Responding to the question, Cook offered an optimistic take. He said "I think there's a lot more to come," he said. "I could not feel more optimistic about our product pipeline", he added.
The Apple CEO went on to suggest that the iPhone lineup still has room for change. "I think there's a lot of innovation left on the smartphone," Cook added.
As reported by Macrumours, the question was likely spurred by rumours of an iPhone 17 ‘Air’ model.
Recent reports indicate that Apple is working on an ultra-thin iPhone, potentially replacing the Plus variant in the lineup. The device is expected to be between 5mm and 6mm thick, making it the thinnest iPhone ever.
As per rumours, Apple may focus on design while keeping costs below the Pro models. The device is expected to feature a lower-powered chip and a single-lens camera, making it a sleek yet more affordable addition to the iPhone lineup.
The phone is said to offer a 6.6-inch display. The analyst suggests that Apple may use a 3 nanometer A19 chipset, similar to the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro models. The processor may be paired with 8GB of RAM.
Apple iPhone 17 Air is expected to have a single camera on the back. This may include a 48MP sensor. For selfies, the handset may have a 24MP camera at the front. The phone is tipped to offer Face ID support.
In a separate discussion, Cook addressed whether the slim design of the 12.9-inch M4 iPad Pro was driving iPad revenue. He clarified that the iPad Air and standard iPad were the primary contributors to the category’s 15% revenue growth during the holiday quarter, rather than the high-priced iPad Pro.
