Apollo Crews Injured on SmackDown, WWE's Growing Injury Crisis Continues!

Apollo Crews reportedly suffered a shoulder injury during his match against Johnny Gargano on WWE SmackDown. This adds to WWE's mounting injury concerns, with recent incidents involving Dakota Kai and JD McDonagh, raising questions about the organization’s handling and prevention of in-ring injuries.

WWE is dealing with multiple injuries, with several superstars getting hurt recently. After reports that Dakota Kai suffered a concussion and JD McDonagh had to be hospitalized after WWE Raw, another wrestler has now joined the list. Apollo Crews was reportedly injured during his match against Johnny Gargano on last week’s WWE SmackDown.
The news was shared by Bryan Alvarez. He mentioned that Crews was in pain after the match, holding his shoulder. However, there are no details yet on how serious the injury is. This situation has again raised concerns about WWE’s handling of injuries, as wrestlers often continue fighting even when they are hurt.

Concerns Over WWE’s Handling of Injuries

Alvarez was critical of the fact that Crews, like other recently injured wrestlers, finished his match instead of stopping for medical help. He said on Wrestling Observer Radio, “Apollo Crews, I checked on that one, he is also hurt. I don’t have an update yet, but it was exactly what I talked about last night. He took the Backcracker, and I don’t know if it’s his pec, or his shoulder, or what but he’s hurt.”
His co-host, Dave Meltzer, explained that wrestlers often try to finish their matches even when they are hurt. He also mentioned that WWE has doctors at ringside who can stop a match if needed. However, according to Meltzer, doctors rarely make that call because they may face backlash.
“There would be ‘hell to pay,’” he said, though he didn’t specify who would be upset by such a decision. This has led to questions about whether WWE should do more to protect its wrestlers. Injuries are common in wrestling, but allowing hurt wrestlers to continue their matches could make things worse.

Apollo Crews has been part of WWE since 2015 and moved to the main roster in 2016. Over the years, he has won the WWE United States and Intercontinental Championships. Although he hasn’t always been a top star, he is known for his strong performances, including a great run in WWE NXT, where he had exciting matches against Bron Breakker and Carmelo Hayes.
His match against Johnny Gargano on WWE SmackDown was his first singles match of 2024, and he managed to win. However, the victory was overshadowed by his injury.
Alvarez added, “So he was injured in that match and what it is we don’t know yet.”
Right now, there is no official update on Crews' condition. WWE has not commented on his injury, and fans are waiting for more information. With so many injuries happening, WWE may need to take more precautions to keep its wrestlers safe.
