“Useless idiot”: Donald Trump has nominated Warren Stephens as the US Ambassador causing outrage among New York Jets fans

Donald Trump has nominated Warren Stephens as the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, which has sparked outrage among New York Jets fans. Stephens is chairman of Stephens, Inc., a major donor to Republican causes and has contributed to Trump's SuperPACs. Stephens is a prominent donor to the Republican Party and is a prominent figure in the financial services industry. But what was the beef of Jets fans in New York when an Arkansas businessman was appointed? It was because Trump's last pick for UK Ambassador was Jets owner Woody Johnson.
Donald Trump has appointed Warren Stephens, an investment banker and Republican mega-donor, as the UK's ambassador. “Warren has always dreamed of serving the United States full time,” wrote Trump in a social media post. “I am thrilled that he will now have that opportunity as the top Diplomat, representing the U.S.A. to one of America’s most cherished and beloved Allies.”

Stephens Inc, a Little Rock-based financial services firm, is headed by Stephens as chairman, president, and CEO. Stephens has regularly given to conservative causes, including opposing Trump's 2016 and 2020 presidential runs. In 2023, he backed Asa Hutchinson's presidential run and in 2024, he gave at least $2m to Make America Great Again Inc, a pro-Trump Super Pac, according to Federal Election Commission filings. In his statement, Trump said Stephens's company was "a wonderful financial services firm," and he credited Stephens with "selflessly giving back to his community as a philanthropist".
New York Jets fans were really upset because Trump's last pick for UK Ambassador was Jets owner Woody Johnson. Johnson was made the UK ambassador in November 2017, nearly a year after Trump had been elected. He served until Joe Biden's inauguration. Jets fans are upset because Trump is leaving with someone else, hoping that Johnson would lose control of the team.
The Jets have been amongst the worst teams in the NFL this season, with not a winning record since the year 2015. Jets fans were expecting him to be selected as ambassador for the team, leading to him losing control over the team to his brother Chris Johnson. However, all this news was met on social media with disapproval.

“Welp, looks like the Jets are stuck with Woody Johnson messing things up for 4 more years,” wrote one user on Twitter. Another user posted, “Even Trump knows Woody is a useless idiot.” “There's no hiding from the next 4 years of "sell the team" chants,” another fan wrote. A different fan declared the appointment, or lack thereof, “A disaster for Jets fans. We needed him away from the football team.” One fan wrote, “Reading the disappointed replies and feeling the need to remind people that Chris Johnson was as bad, if not worse, than Woody.”
