It was a more than game loss for the San Francisco 49ers in their match against the Buffalo Bills. 49ers' star running back Christian McCaffrey's injury woes have taken another devastating turn. The All-Pro suffered a PCL injury during Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills, casting a significant doubt over his availability for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Christian McCaffrey's Injury Threatens to Sideline Him for the Rest of 2024 Season

McCaffrey, known for his dynamic playmaking ability, was injured during the second quarter when he stepped awkwardly on a sweep to the left on a snow-covered field. The injury led to a 5-yard loss, and McCaffrey immediately went down, requiring medical attention on the sidelines. He was later ruled out for the remainder of the game after halftime.

After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that McCaffrey had suffered a PCL injury, and there were growing concerns about his ability to return this season. As Shanahan expressed, it felt like a "nightmare" for the team, especially given McCaffrey’s recent strong performance in practice. "It was frustrating," Shanahan shared. "He had a great week of practice, and I could feel his urgency and stuff. Thought he came out great, looking real good. He looked like he just got his shoestring there, he was about to break a house call." Shanahan also mentioned his concern for McCaffrey, saying, "I'm guessing he got hurt on that play... hurt for him and tough for our team that that happened to him."

Following the injury, McCaffrey was seen walking very slowly using crutches, with a large brace on his right knee, according to Bills reporter Sal Capaccio. ESPN also reported that McCaffrey would undergo an MRI to assess the severity of the injury. The running back had already missed the first eight games of the season due to bilateral Achilles tendinitis, making his potential extended absence even more devastating for the 49ers.

McCaffrey had signed a two-year, $38 million extension in June, securing his place with San Francisco through the 2027 season. With a hefty $16.2 million due for next year, this injury could have a significant impact on the 49ers’ plans for 2024 and beyond.
