Was just trying to build partnerships. That partnership with Tim (Southee) really helped me out, the objective was clear and we knew what we needed to do. Virat Kohli marked his return to form in Test cricket with his first half-century of the year, delivering it just when India needed him most in the second innings of the first Test against New Zealand on Friday.

After reaching his half-century, Kohli became the fourth Indian batter to surpass 9,000 runs in Test cricket, joining the ranks of legends like Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,265), and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122).

However, Kohli took the longest to reach this milestone, achieving it in 197 innings.

India's openers started steadily after New Zealand batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra hit 134 to guide the visitors to a lead of 356 on day three of the rain-hit opening Test on Friday.
India were 57-0 at tea in Bengaluru with Yashasvi Jaiswal on 29 and skipper Rohit Sharma on 27. The hosts trail by 299 runs in their second innings.

Spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets each to help bowl out New Zealand for 402 during the second session.

The Wellington-born Ravindra resumed on his overnight score of 22 and was the last New Zealand wicket to fall after smashing 13 fours and four sixes.

The left-hander raised his ton with a boundary off Ravichandran Ashwin before lunch and kept up the charge during an eighth-wicket stand of 137 with Tim Southee, who smashed 65 with five fours and four sixes.

India's quicks bowled good spells in the morning after New Zealand resumed on 180-3 with Mohammed Siraj taking the wicket of Daryl Mitchell, caught at gully for 18.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Blundell was the next to depart with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah getting him caught at second slip for five.

Jadeja sent back Glenn Phillips for 14 and Matt Henry for eight with deliveries that skidded off the pitch to rattle the stumps.

India said they were keeping Rishabh Pant off the field for the day after the wicketkeeper injured his knee on Thursday, with Dhruv Jurel substituted in on Thursday.

It was the same knee Pant hurt in a serious car crash in December 2022 that forced him out of action for more than a year.

New Zealand bowled out India for 46 on day two, their third-lowest Test score and lowest ever on home turf.

After Yashasvi Jaiswal collected a couple of boundaries in the William ORourke third over, he then smacked a boundary to the cover-point fence in the following Ajaz Patel over. As Tea break on the third day approaches, seems like Jaiswal has found his rhythm. IND 47/0 in 12 overs

FOUR! Yashasvi Jaiswal ends Matt Henry's third over with a boundary to the third-man fence. It was a back of length delivery around off from Henry and it rose a bit extra. Jaiswal did well in keeping it down, guiding it to the third-man fence through the gap between the slip and the gully fielder. IND 22/0 in 6 overs

Riding on a scintillating century from Rachin, the Kiwis finish on 402 all out in reply to India's embarrassing first innings score of 46 all out.

The visitors take a mammoth 356-run first innings lead as India have a big task cut out for them!

Along with Rachin's 134, Devon Conway also scored a solid 91 at the top on the second day.

Tim Southee also chipped in with an entertaining 73-ball 65.

India needed a Kiwi collapse but instead the visitors piled up too many runs on the board in their first essay.

New Zealand are in pole position in this Test and India in serious trouble.

Originally run OUT caught behind by the on-field umpire, Rachin Ravindra sends the decision upstairs and gets it reversed. It was a length ball from round the wicket from Siraj and Rachin went for cut. Misses it and there was some noise as the ball went to the keeper. The decision went in favour of India but Rachin was convinced that he had not hit the ball. Ultra-Edge showed a little scribble but it was after the ball had passed the bat. OUT! Mohammed Siraj finally manages to break the century-plus stand between Tim Southee and Rachin Ravindra. Slower ball does the trick for Siraj as Southee hits it straight to Ravindra Jadeja at covers. It was a slower ball from Siraj and Southee went deep into the crease and looking to carve in over the cover fielder. It ends up being a soft dismissal and Southee is livid with himself.
