India gave their quest to play the World Test Championship (WTC) final for a third straight edition a massive boost with a convincing win against Bangladesh in Kanpur
India took a big step towards booking a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final for a third straight edition with a 7-wicket win against Bangladesh in the second Test in Kanpur on Tuesday (1 October). The win gave India a 2-0 Test series win and extended their lead at the top of the WTC standings.
Even though the second and third day of the Test were wiped out without a ball bowled and only 35 overs were possible on the first day, India produced a heist with a staggering all-round display.
We all keep going. Obviously at some stage we had to start working with different personnel. When Rahul bhai said he was done working here. We had a fantastic time but life moves on. Gautam Gambhir, I've played with him and know what sort of mindset he comes in with. Early days but it's been a good start. Once we lost two and a half days, when we came on day 4 we wanted to get them out as quickly as possible and see what we could do with the bat. When they got bowled out for 230, it wasn't about the runs we got but the overs we got at them. Pitch didn't have much. To make a game out of it on that pitch was a superb effort. It was a risk we were willing to take because when you're trying to bat like that, you can be bundled out for a low score. But we were ready for it even if we got bowled out for 100-150. He's been good. Lot of domestic cricket he has played. When you come up through the ranks like that, there are a lot of overs in the legs. He has the quality and the skill. Good body as well - can bowl long spells. You have to make sure you prepare your bench strength.
Player of the Series: Ravichandran Ashwin
"Winning this game was important for us. Massive win for us in the context of the WTC. When we bowled them out yesterday, it was a little after lunch. Rohit was keen that we needed 80 overs to bowl at them. He said even if we get bowled out for 230, it's okay. And he set the tone with the way he stepped out first ball. You get more bite with the new ball than the old ball. The more you put overspin, it's harder on this pitch because the ball doesn't leave the surface. I'm happy to settle into the rhythm. The revs I put on the ball cannot be underestimated." - Ashwin
India pummelled Bangladesh to win the second Test and sweep the series 2-0 in Kanpur. The 7-wicket win increased their lead in WTC standings
India effectively needed two days to get the better of Bangladesh, winning the second Test by 7 wickets in Kanpur on Tuesday (1 October). The dominant win follows from an equally thumping 280-run triumph in the first Test in Chennai.
The 2-0 Test series clean sweep extended India's lead at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. It also kept the Rohit Sharma-led side unbeaten in Test matches at home, their last series loss coming in 2012. Since then, India have lost only four Test matches.
Player of the Match: Yashasvi Jaiswal (72 & 51)
"I think I was just thinking what I can do for my team. The situation was different in Chennai, and different here. Every innings is important. I try my best and prepare in that manner. Was told to play the way I want to. Wanted to win this game." - Jaiswal
Both the Test matches we didn't bat well. In these conditions we need to bat well. If you look at our batters - we played 30-40 balls and got out. The way Ashwin and Jaddu batted at that time - they batted really well. That partnership cost us that game. The way Mominul batted this innings was good. And the way Miraz bowled.

IND vs BAN Live Score: Coach Gautam Gambhir starts his stint in Test cricket with a 2-0 series sweep
I don't think about adjectives...It's just good to get the win after we lost two days. Really special win today. So, in this you use your experience. Yes, it's easier said and done. This was different to what it was in Chennai. We try to communicate and solve the problem in front of you. As I said, we've played a lot of cricket in India and understand the nature of the wicket. You find options and discuss with senior players. I'm also in a role now where I help other bowlers. He comes up to me quite a lot and asks me 'what you think I should do?' He's got a lot of heart and whenever he bowls, he gives his best. Yeah, after the World Cup, we got a break and were prepping for the Test series and you understand the number of overs you bowl. We have a long Test series [in Australia] and that's why he had that break.
