In the match proceedings, Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and chose to bat first. Pakistan made a strong start with Babar Azam showing excellent form from the beginning, hitting five boundaries.

Azam's batting approach differed significantly from his previous game where he scored fifty runs in 81 balls. He displayed aggressive intent by attacking Axar Patel early, advancing down the pitch to hit a four towards long on.
However, Hardik Pandya cut short Azam's promising innings. The all-rounder induced an outside edge from Azam with a good length delivery moving away, which was caught by wicketkeeper KL Rahul. Pandya gave Azam a send-off gesture as he departed.

However, Pakistan's momentum was arrested with three wickets in quick succession - across 14 runs in three overs - despite two dropped chances in the Indian camp.
