One of the most important Hindu festivals for Lord Shiva-devotees, the Maha Shivratri is celebrated every year on the 14th night of the Phalgun month as per the Hindu calendar. This falls in February-March in the Gregorian calendar. Maha Shivratri is a sacred occasion which symbolises the convergence of Shiva and Shakti thus signifying the cosmic balance.
The word Maha Shivratri literally translates from Hindi to-- the Great Night of Shiva and there are many stories associated with it. One of it being that it was on this night when Lord Shiva had performed Tandava-- the dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. Some also believe that it was on this auspicious night when Shiva ji married Goddess Parvati, thus symbolising the divine union of Shiva and Shakti.
On this holy day, devotees wake up early, bathe, wear clean clothes, observe fasts, meditate, and chant mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya” to seek Lord Shiva's blessings to purify their mind and souls, and grow on the spiritual path. Devotees also visit Shiva temples on this day for Rudrabhishek which is done by offering milk, honey, fruits, and bilva (bel) leaves to Shivlinga. Devotees also stay up all night for jaagrans by singing bhajans, performing rituals, and meditating. On this day, chanting Shiva mantras and reciting the Shiva Purana are considered highly auspicious.
