Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Oath Ceremony 2025 Live Updates: 'Ayushman scheme to be implemented; CAG reports will be tabled soon,' Delhi CM after 1st cabinet meet

Delhi CM Oath Ceremony Live Updates: Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, accompanied by her cabinet colleagues, performed the 'Yamuna Aarti' at Vasudev Ghat on Thursday, following her formal inauguration as the ninth CM of the national capital at the Secretariat.

Gupta, along with Delhi BJP state president Virendra Sachdeva and ministers including Parvesh Sahib Singh, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Kumar Singh, performed a 'Maa Yamuna Puja' before leading the Aarti. Ram bhajans were sung at the ghat, with chants of "Jai Shree Ram" and "Yamuna Maiya Ki Jai."

Rekha Gupta's rise to the post of Delhi chief minister marks the culmination of a nearly three-decade-long political journey, characterized by her low-profile yet impactful presence. Despite not being among the front-runners for the CM's post after the BJP's victory over AAP in Delhi's assembly elections, her selection as the legislative party leader surprised many within her own party. Gupta is set to take the oath as Delhi's fourth woman Chief Minister on Thursday at Ramlila Maidan.

Born in 1974 in Nandgarh village, Haryana, Gupta moved to Delhi in 1976 after her father secured a job at the State Bank of India. She began her political journey at Daulat Ram College, joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. In 1996, she became the president of the Delhi University Students' Union, making her the first DUSU office bearer to become Chief Minister of Delhi.

Gupta first contested the assembly elections in 2015 from the Shalimar Bagh constituency but lost to AAP's Bandana Kumari. After BJP's decision not to renominate sitting councillors in the 2017 municipal elections, she was briefly out of the electoral arena. However, she made a comeback in 2022 as a municipal councillor from Shalimar Bagh (B) ward. In 2023, she contested the mayoral election but lost to AAP's Shelly Oberoi.

Determined to regain political ground in Delhi, the BJP fielded Gupta again in the recent assembly elections. This time, she secured a decisive victory, defeating AAP's sitting MLA and her long-time rival, Bandana Kumari, by over 29,000 votes.
