Actress Ananya Panday shares her views on item numbers in Hindi cinema, suggesting ways to do them respectfully and without objectification. Glamorous songs have been part of Indian cinemas ever since the beginning. From Katrina Kaif’s 'Sheila Ki Jawani' to Malaika Arora’s ‘Munni Badnaam’, the number of glamorous songs, often known as ‘item numbers’ being produced in Hindi cinema is only surging, and so is their popularity. The concept of such glamorous songs has always been a topic of heated debate amongst cinephiles and critics.

Actress Ananya Panday has now opined on the concept and also reacted to whether she is open to doing item numbers. In a recent conversation with Humans of Bombay, Ananya Panday said that ‘there are ways in which’ one can do such songs. She stated that she wouldn’t do it if she felt that through the song the girl was being disrespected or sexualized. She said that it has to be seen from ‘the other perspective’, where maybe the girl is in control.
Elaborating further, Ananya stated that ‘everything doesn’t have to be done in the way that it’s been done for so many years’. She asserted that instead there are ways to change things around, to be ‘sexy but not to be sexualized and objectified’. Ananya added, “It’s about just switching the control to the girl instead of the man.”
The ‘Call Me Bae’ actress also addressed the issue of men's stares in such a song, where they are asked to take their shirts off and objectified. The actress’ fresh perspective that objectification of any kind regardless of gender is not okay has added a new dimension to the whole debate.
