Panaji: An Arambol man who lived near the beach and was going for his daily walk on Sunday evening was brutally murdered by shack workers. This is the second murder in less than a month in which a man was killed by shack workers, and the eighth case of assault along North Goa’s coastal belt.
Amar Bandekar, a 28-year-old resident of Arambol, was murdered at around 7.30pm on Sunday. Mandrem police arrested one shack employee, Himachal native Surender Kumar, 39, and a local Pernem court later remanded him in seven days’ police custody.
Police said that Sea Lounge Beach Shack placed their dinner tables and beds close to the sea, and Bandekar, during his walk, sat on one of the chairs.
An employee of the shack then asked him to vacate the chair, and while the chair was being moved, employees of the shack began assaulting Bandekar.
Police said that Bandekar started running towards the lifeguard tower to seek help. After narrating the incident to the lifeguard, he collapsed, and was immediately shifted to the community health centre, Tuem, where he was declared ‘brought dead’.
The victim’s brother Yuvraj, in his complaint, said that at Sea Lounge Beach Shack, Kumar and other staff of the shack, with common intention, had a verbal altercation with Amar on the issue of shifting the chairs.
The quarrel escalated, and suddenly, in a fit of anger, the accused persons assaulted the Amar with slaps, kicks, and sharp and hard objects, causing him serious bodily injuries. To escape the attack and save himself from further assault, he managed to run from the spot, but after running a short distance, he collapsed.
“We have arrested Kumar in the case,” Mandrem PI Sherif Jaques said. During the course of the investigation, some staff of Sea Lounge Beach Shack who are alleged to have been involved in the incident were apprehended and brought to the police station for interrogation.
A post-mortem examination was conducted at GMC, and Dr Sunil Chimbolkar, in his report, said that the cause of death is acute myocardial infarction with coronary arteries occlusion consequent to blunt force impact injuries to the head, face, and brain in the person with an alleged history of assault.
On Jan 3, six employees of a shack allegedly assaulted six tourists from Mumbai on the beach over “a petty issue”. Goa police arrested six individuals.
On Dec 30, a Hyderabad tourist died after he was allegedly brutally assaulted by staff of a shack in Calangute. Bhola Ravi Teja, 28, died on the spot, after which Marina Shack owner Agnelo Silveira, 64, his son, Schubert, 23, and two shack workers, Anil Bista, 24, and Kamal Sunar, 23, both from Nepal, were arrested.
