A decade ago, he was dragged out—now, Vijender Gupta will run show as Delhi assembly speaker

Ten years after being forcibly removed from the Delhi Assembly, BJP leader Vijender Gupta has returned as Speaker. His appointment follows the BJP's victory in the 2025 Delhi elections. Gupta, who presides over the same Assembly where he once clashed with marshals, promises responsible conduct and meaningful discussions.

NEW DELHI: Ten years ago, chaos erupted in the Delhi assembly. Marshals stormed in, gripping BJP leader Vijender Gupta as he resisted with all his might. His white kurta-pyjama crumpled in the struggle, hands clinging to the furniture as half a dozen officials pried him away.

Dramatic visuals from the assembly captured the moment—Gupta, resisted as half a dozen marshals lifted and dragged him out.
Clutching onto furniture, he fought every step of the way before being ejected. Speaker Ram Niwas Goel had ordered their removal, ensuring the Budget proceedings continued without disruption.
Fast forward to today and Gupta is back—but this time, as the speaker of the very House from which he was once thrown out.
The BJP’s stunning victory in the 2025 Delhi elections paved the way for his appointment. Having retained his Rohini seat, which he has held since 2015, Gupta now holds the gavel instead of resisting its authority.

"I am grateful to the party for entrusting me with this role. I will ensure responsible conduct in the Assembly and encourage meaningful discussions," he told PTI.

What happened in 2015

Back in 2015, all three BJP MLAs—Vijender Gupta, OP Sharma and Jagdish Pradhan—were marshalled out of the House after storming into the well and shouting slogans demanding the implementation of the Fourth Delhi Finance Commission’s recommendations.
Their protest disrupted the session, prompting Speaker Ram Niwas Goel to order their eviction so the Budget proceedings could resume.
The previous day, OP Sharma had already been forcibly removed after interrupting chief minister Arvind Kejriwal while he was making a statement.
A decade later, the tables have turned and Gupta now presides over the same Assembly where he once clashed with marshals.
