Mylai based Tamil materials (ETexts of ancient literary works, devotional and film songs,
short compositions,....)
MYLAI is a Tamil font created by Dr. K.Kalyanasundaram primarily as a medium for archiving and distributing tamil electronic texts on the Internet. The font is available in identical format - for use on Windows Pcs (Windows 3.x, NT and 95), Macintosh PCs and UNIX platforms. Unlike most of the commercial fonts that use the classical tamil typewriter keymap, Mylai keymapping is phonetically linked to english/roman keyboard.
A Web page describing features of Mylai Tamil font is available. . The Mylai tamil font is distributed Free (direct download). to individuals and non-profit organizations.
In the last two years, several thousand internet users have obtained a free copy of the Mylai Tamil font and have been using it successfully on Macintosh and Windows-based PCs. The mylai tamil font users spread across the entire globe (Continental US, Hawaii, Alaska, most of the European countries, Gulf states, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Australasia, Japan, .....). The collection of electronic texts in Tamil that I am making available has been a major incentive for a number of internet audience to install Mylai on their PCs.
If you are interested to get additional font faces corresponding to mylai keymap, Dr. K. Srinivasan of ADHAWIN is offering Mylai-Sri free. Please visit his web site to download a copy.
It is now possible to set up bilingual (english/tamil) web pages, subject to certain minimal constraints: use Web browser such as Netscape either on a Macintosh or on Windows based PC and have the tamil font (Mylai) installed on that same PC. Tamil materials can be directly displayed in Tamil along with explanatory notes in English.
A handful of the Internet users have already taken lead to set up Web pages that use Mylai font. Dr. Ram Ravindran of Indiana, USA, for example, has set up a Mylai-based Web page that allow internet audience to learn Tamil. Within a few months of its existence, this site has become very popular. Earlier I posted through Web some Tamil kural/venba compositions of Dr. Ilango of New Zealand on the Mechanics of Materials. Etext files of Tamil fims songs based on Mylai are also available.
