How To Become A 007 = So far I have not dedicated two consecutive posts to a Thought Leader but today this rare event happened. My earlier post was dedicated to John Clifford and this one too. The reason is, John advised thusly: If you do not like modern slavery work culture also known as 996 work system then just say no. There are laws to protect you. I was stunned - this simple solution did not occur to me. I had to do this follow up post to honor Thought Leadership from John. = The 996 working hour system is a work schedule practiced illegally by many companies in the United States. It derives its name from its requirement that employees work from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, 6 days per week; i.e. 72 hours per week, 12 hours per day. A number of banking companies like Bank of America have adopted this system as their official work schedule. Critics argue that the 996 working hour system is a violation of several Labour Laws and have called it "modern slavery". As John states: The 996 work system is illegal - just say no. I say: You become 007 What is going on in this cryptic number theoretic warfare? I already revealed 996 work system. Banks know this too. "Bank of America has a system called ‘banker diary,’ where junior bankers input their weekly hours. It is supposed to safeguard us from overworking by flagging anyone who inputs more than 80 hours a week,” one said. “I cannot actually even start to count the number of times I was asked by [managing directors and directors] to lie on my banker diary so that it wouldn’t get flagged.” “Our policy is clear and we expect employees to accurately record their hours,” Bank of America said in a statement. It’s a top-down problem, sources — most of whom asked for anonymity because they feared repercussions for speaking out — said. “VPs do not respect junior people’s time,” a managing director sympathetic to younger bankers told The Post. “They will proactively give someone a piece of work at 6 p.m. on a Friday that could have given it to them on Tuesday, but [managers] were distracted.” Mark Moran who now runs an investor relations firm Equity Animal, but spent four years working on mergers and acquisitions at Lazard and Centerview Partners . “You typically don’t have to get to the office until 10 a.m. and you often don’t get any work assigned until the afternoon,” he said of many junior employees at large banks “But around 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., you often get an assignment and have to stay until 2 a.m. finishing it.” = I asked John, how many tons of ivory was used to construct the tower where he lives in Washington State. I am waiting with bated breath to know the answer. In the meantime let me finally reveal what is 007. The 007 is you do 0 hours of work with 0 pay for 7 days a week. The 007 with system is also known as Unemployment It has been observed that people on 007 system work very hard at their home to get back onto 996 system which sent them home in the first place! Well done!

For me, the journey of learning involves a three-part process: Passive learning, Unlearning, and Relearning. Passive learning represents the initial stage where we absorb knowledge through formal education, informal sources, or direct instruction. However, as we navigate through life and encounter diverse experiences, we inevitably come face to face with ideas, beliefs, or concepts that challenge our existing knowledge frameworks. This stage, known as Unlearning, requires us to critically assess our preconceived notions, biases, and assumptions. It involves a process of introspection, reflection, and the willingness to let go of outdated or inaccurate information. The final phase, Relearning, is the active pursuit of new knowledge and skills. Last year, I came across a stat that really made me think: Telegram Messenger, with just 35 employees, brought in over $1 billion in revenue in 2024. Compare that to WhatsApp, with around 1,000 employees and slightly higher revenues. It made me pause. This isn’t about cheering for Telegram at all. It’s about asking: how does such a small team achieve such big results? Let’s put this in perspective. Below is a chart comparing Telegram’s efficiency to other major messaging apps. Telegram’s revenue per employee completely dwarfs its competitors. But this isn’t just about cutting costs. It’s about focusing on what truly drives impact. Another very celebrated example is that of NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang. He famously manages around 50 direct reports, breaking every rule in the traditional management playbook. While it’s not the only reason for Nvidia’s success, it reflects a mindset: challenging norms and embracing uncertainty. Now think about "HR". Deloitte estimates that inefficiencies in HR cost businesses over $200 billion annually - recruitment delays, disengaged employees, and high turnover. Legacy systems have made waste feel normal. T.E.A.M. Together Effort Always Multiplies If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Together doesn’t mean with a bunch of random people. Together is more like holding hands 🤝: it means proximity in space, in spirit, in ideas, in values, even in thoughts. It doesn’t mean being the same - it means sharing commonalities as a group. Building a team is the most difficult task in business and in life. There is no formula for it. But when you have it (a team of people who act together, who have each other’s back, and who care for each other) you have the ability to multiply effort. And effort that has a direction and purpose nearly always turns into results. Build teams, invest your time and resources in the most important resource that a business can have - its people. << The i-Word >> While one might have wanted to claim that the 2024 words were without a doubt “the,” “is,” and “but,” one must feel defeated having to secede that it might be the oh-so-clearly-locked-down-and-delineated “i”-word. And yet, i vote for the word “distractor.” The latest definition for “intelligence” is locked behind a paywall to a publication logo’ed with the initial letter i, red capitalized for its name “the information.” There is utterly much to unpack in that statement. Let it simmer a bit These days the i stands as a prefix, symbolizing i-ndividuals making massive amounts of money via technological i-nnovation being i-mpeccably glorious and i-cy slick designed The earlier-mentioned walled-in, specific definition is one of Artificial General Intelligence “AGI.” It is a definition in harmony with the ideologies of the made-great nation where this new definition sprouts from and yet, it is different from the definition yielded by they who have worked on this for several decades (Voss, Goertzel, et al.) Whether one should critically question “AGI” is a very relevant question and task indeed If we have to take the word of third-party publishers (e.g., Tech Crunch) with access to the i of information, “intelligence,” as defined by Microsoft and OpenAI, equates to a machine that can generate a profit of “at least 100 Billion US Dollars.” Educators, note, the definition requires literacies in finance and in corporate or certain type of human individuals’ power relations. It also requires making money to be delegated to a tool. The day “AGI” has been reached, so the publications claim, is the day when Microsoft looses certain access to the i for innovation or information or intelligence at OpenAI. Microsoft then will enter / has entered a world of i-gnorance We already knew that with power and access to resources the populous is guided into hero-worshipping and being true believers that they who wield these are also wielding anything else eagerly coveted by our greedy and anxious hearts. That eagerness includes intelligence, diamonds, & for the ‘horny’ minds out there; beautifully-sculpted bodies accessed for groping or trafficking with or without consent While LLMs might not be the path to i, or rather agi, surely ego, power and money are. With regret, Dobrev, Legg, Hutter, Lu, Park, et al., your definitions are simply not good enough: market rules, money talks As for the soooo much broader field of computer sciences, cognitive sciences, neurosciences, medicine, biology, neurobiology, psychology, psychiatry, critical pedagogy, anthropology, philosophy, careful consideration, metacognition or reflection, reason, scientific methodologies, education & research institutions, human observation & experience, people or life in general, or was it all BS, well, it walks.
