Cassava is one of Thailand’s most important crops for over 500,000 smallholder farming households. Thailand is the seller of most cassava in the world for animal feeds, consumption, and raw materials. Over the past week, the market in Kampala experienced notable fluctuations in commodity prices. Maize grain and dry fermented cassava saw significant decreases, reflecting changes in supply or demand dynamics. The drop in cassava prices is attributed to the onset of the harvest season in Soroti, which brings substantial amounts of cassava to the market. Additionally, both super rice and Pakistani rice experienced price drops, indicating possible market adjustments. Conversely, several other commodities, including first and second-class flour, beans, soya beans, millet, sorghum, sunflower, and simsim, maintained their prices from the previous week. This stability suggests that these commodities have consistent supply and demand patterns, providing some predictability amidst the broader market changes. As we continue to strengthen the Onion and Garlic Value Chain, UAA and other stakeholders visited an input dealer in Ntungamo District. Below is a translation of his discussion: "My name is Patrick, and I represent Evergreen Agro Input. I supply the Super Yali onion variety to farmers, sourcing it from East-West Seed. I have provided this variety to many farmers, and it has a very high germination rate. At the nursery bed level, it is less affected by rain, making it an excellent variety." When asked about the duration of this variety from nursery to transplanting, Patrick explained that it typically takes about 2 months, but with proper management, it can be ready in 45 days (1.5 months). He added that a 250g pack can yield about 10 bags or more, with harvest taking place 3 months after transplanting (total production time: 5 months). Weeding is done at least three times. Patrick also deals with other onion varieties, including the Kigutiya (seen as black seeds in the sack), which he imports from Tanzania. This variety is priced at 80,000 UGX per kilogram. (Kigutiya, named after the sack packaging, is a local variety.) He mentioned that 1kg of Kigutiya covers about half an acre. However, it is the least preferred variety by farmers due to its vulnerability to rain, lower yields, and higher spoilage during storage compared to other varieties. All of this was made possible thanks to Uganda Agribusiness Alliance Ltd. and the Small Foundation.

Observing sugarcane farmers, I’ve drawn parallels that resonate deeply with operational service governance in banking and fintech. Here are a few key takeaways: 1. Patience and Long-Term Vision Sugarcane takes over a year to mature, requiring patience and foresight. Similarly, service governance isn’t about quick wins. It’s about building resilient frameworks that yield results over time. Effective governance involves investing in policies and controls today that safeguard future operations. 2. Risk Management and Seasonality Farmers know that drought, pests, or price fluctuations are inevitable. They diversify, plan irrigation, and stagger planting seasons. In service governance, anticipating risks—whether operational, compliance-related, or technological—allows us to mitigate potential disruptions before they escalate. 3. Collaboration and Shared Success Sugarcane farmers often pool resources to transport harvests or access mills. Strong governance thrives on collaboration across teams and departments. When governance is siloed, blind spots emerge. By fostering shared responsibility, organizations can achieve more holistic oversight. 4. Data-Driven Decisions Farmers track weather patterns, soil health, and market prices. In governance, data is equally critical. Consistent monitoring of service performance, compliance metrics, and incident reports enables proactive, informed decision-making. 5. Sustainability and Regeneration Just as farmers rotate crops or enrich the soil, governance frameworks must evolve. Policies that worked last year may need adjustments today. Horticulture sub sector is such a high potential economic growth enhancer for our economy #Uganda for obvious reasons: it's mainly dominated by smallholder farmers who produce a diversity of fruits and vegetables that are sold in global , regional and domestic value chains, ensuring income at house hold level, creates multiple jobs along the various chains, a substantial foreign exchange earner in million of dollars estimated @USD 100- 150M, with potential to earn the country a whopping USD 1billion if we get out act together to remove bottlenecks that impede maximizing our potential.
