Nuclear energy could contribute to Asean regional grid: Roundtable panellist Summary: At the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) on October 24, 2024, nuclear energy was highlighted as a stable, low-carbon option to support the Asean regional power grid's shift from coal to greener alternatives. The discussions focused on how nuclear power could complement renewable energy, particularly given the intermittency of solar and wind power. Small modular reactors (SMRs) were identified as a potential solution for power generation in space-constrained areas and for remote locations. Panelists discussed the growing role of nuclear in Asia's energy mix, predicting an increase in nuclear power usage by 2050, particularly with the commercialization of SMRs. However, they emphasized that political cooperation within the Asean region would be crucial for this transition. Singapore launches grant call for natural gas power plants to study carbon capture and storage Summary: Singapore has taken a significant step in advancing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies by launching a grant call aimed at reducing carbon emissions from natural gas power plants. This initiative is crucial, as natural gas is expected to power more than 50% of Singapore’s energy needs by 2035, currently representing over 90% of the electricity mix. The energy sector, responsible for around 40% of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions, is a key focus of decarbonization efforts. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has outlined two main CCS approaches: the first involves capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from exhaust gases after natural gas combustion, while the second focuses on capturing CO2 during hydrogen production from natural gas. Hydrogen, when combusted, produces no CO2, making it a clean fuel, but its production process must also be carbon-free to maintain its green credentials. From 2024, all new or upgraded gas plants in Singapore must be able to run on 30% hydrogen and be retrofitted to eventually run on 100%. This CCS initiative complements Singapore's broader strategy to collaborate with Indonesia on storing CO2 emissions overseas, as part of the cross-border CCS project on Jurong Island. The S Hub consortium, consisting of ExxonMobil and Shell, is also exploring the feasibility of storing 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030, using deep underground or seabed formations. Singapore is also focused on integrating CCS as a core component of its efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. While promising, the deployment of CCS technologies at scale remains expensive, with costs per tonne of CO2 ranging from US$85 for capture, plus additional costs for shipping and storage. Singapore’s carbon tax, set to rise to between $50 and $80 per tonne by 2030, will play a role in making CCS more economically viable, although current rates are not yet sufficient. Research efforts in Singapore are accelerating, with NUS scientists developing innovative techniques like sponge-like metal organic frameworks and membrane technology to enhance CO2 capture efficiency. Research update: The latest research paper article “Climate Change Mitigation Through Innovative Solar-Powered Car Ventilation System Design and Evaluation for the Malaysian Context”. The article was published in the Journal of Novel Carbon Resource Sciences & Green Asia Strategy  (SCOPUS) Automotive carbon emissions, primarily governed by fuel consumption, are closely related to climate change. Parked cars act as inadvertent greenhouses, accumulate heat, requiring increased fuel consumption for air conditioning upon re-entry. Reducing fuel consumption will contribute to sustainable transportation and mitigate climate change by contributing to sustainable transportation. Solar-powered car ventilation is our solution. Study includes comprehensive design, efficiency assessment, and system performance assessment utilizing Solidworks and Creo. Cost analysis, material selection, and market-ready component integration were taken into account. Using the solar-powered ventilation system, interior vehicle temperatures were reduced by 9.10 to 11.63°C. The highest efficiency achieved under ideal conditions was 92.95%. Efficiency calculations under the same simulation parameters on the first day reached 73.44%, while in the real test it reached 62.11%. Simulation and real-world testing differ by 11.33%. Multilateral cooperation, like the ASEAN power grid, faces challenges due to differing national priorities. However, concerns remain about balancing export projects with domestic renewable energy needs. Launch of Singapore Mechanical & Electrical Carbon Calculator Summary: Singapore has launched a new carbon emissions calculator for mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems, following the introduction of a similar tool for building materials in June 2023. The Singapore Mechanical & Electrical Carbon Calculator (MECC) was announced at a biannual awards ceremony by the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC). Developed by the National University of Singapore’s Energy Studies Institute (ESI) and JTC Corporation, and supported by the SGBC and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the MECC aims to help construction companies comprehensively calculate embedded carbon emissions, thereby aiding national emission reduction targets. Embedded carbon refers to greenhouse gas emissions from the manufacture, transport, installation, and construction of building materials. As part of Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, the government targets to green 80% of buildings by total floor area, have 80% of new buildings be super low energy, and improve energy efficiency of top green buildings by 80% over 2005 standards by 2030. To date, 58% of buildings have been greened, and the energy efficiency of top green buildings has improved by 71% over 2005 standards, although only 7% of new buildings are super low energy. Experts believe the MECC will help private companies reduce long-term carbon emissions. While currently voluntary, it is expected that the use of MECC will become a common industry standard. The NUS campus-wide solar PV installation project is reported in the latest NUS News at https://lnkd.in/g-v_5J3X A key driver of the project's success is the collaboration between the NUS UCI team and the SERIS team. SERIS’ cloud-based PV monitoring system, our colleague Soe Pyae & his team from SES Cluster are prominently featured in the article. The project began in 2018 when UCI collaborated with SERIS to do a feasibility study to install PV panels across campus.

Current Energy Landscape: Natural Gas Dependency: Accounts for around 95% of Singapore’s electricity production, contributing to 40% of the country’s emissions. Challenges of Natural Gas: Despite being cleaner than coal, natural gas emits significant CO2 and methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Hydrogen Strategy: Ambiguity: The strategy references "clean hydrogen," which can be either green (from renewable sources) or blue (from fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage, CCS). CCS Issues: CCS is criticized for being energy-intensive, costly, and often failing to meet emissions reduction goals. Green Hydrogen: High Costs: Production costs range from $3-6 per kilogram. Local Production Limitations: Limited landmass, low wind speeds, and high urban density restrict large-scale solar and wind energy projects. Researchers at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University have proposed an adaptive robust optimization approach to minimize operating costs for hybrid hydrogen-battery energy storage systems (HBESS) in microgrids. The model, detailed in the journal Global Energy Interconnection, utilizes robust optimization for day-ahead hydrogen dispatch and battery storage state-of-charge (SoC) management, while the intraday stage focuses on dispatching battery storage within the defined SoC interval. 'To hedge against uncertainties, the adaptive robust optimization method is proposed to adapt the proposed HBES system integrate microgrid operation model with integer recourse variables and then solved by the proposed outer-inner-CCG algorithm,' stated Professor Xu Zhao. The simulations affirm the exceptional performance, efficiency, and resilience of the adaptive robust operation model. Tan See Leng: Central Gas Entity Can Ensure Stable Procurement and Meet Electricity Demand Summary: Singapore's establishment of a central gas procurement entity aims to stabilize natural gas supplies, ensuring a more secure and diverse energy supply. This move comes after challenges during the 2021-2022 global energy crisis, where volatile energy prices and a reluctance by power generators to sign new gas contracts threatened Singapore’s gas supply. Natural gas accounts for 75% of Singapore's energy consumption. The newly passed Energy Transition Measures and Other Amendments Bill will allow the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to mandate that power generators procure a minimum amount of natural gas from the central entity. Experts believe this centralized approach strengthens energy security by allowing Singapore to sign long-term contracts and reducing risks for power generators. It will also enhance Singapore's bargaining power and ensure supply stability amid geopolitical uncertainties. The legislation is part of Singapore's long-term energy transition strategy, balancing decarbonization efforts with energy security, aiming to stabilize electricity prices in the long run. Google Signs Waste Wood Recycling PPA for Singapore Data Centers Summary: Google has entered a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with PacificLight Energy (PLE) and Rexus Bioenergy (Rexus) to supply its Singapore data centers with renewable energy generated from waste wood. This partnership aims to advance Google's goal of operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. Key Highlights: Pioneering Biomass Plant: The 13.2MW waste wood-to-energy (WWtE) biomass plant by Rexus in Singapore will be the first of its kind globally. It will convert non-recyclable waste wood, such as horticultural waste and timber from the logistics industry, into energy. The plant features an electrical wood processing system and a high-volumetric vertical silo managed by a Smart 3D visualization handling system. Commercial Operations and Carbon Capture: Set to commence commercial operations in 2026, the plant will operate 24/7 and incorporate a pilot-scale carbon capture system. The captured CO2 will be utilized for downstream applications like microalgae production and CO2-enriched greenhouse farming. Strategic Importance: Giorgio Fortunato, head of clean energy and power for Asia Pacific at Google, emphasized the significance of this project in progressing towards clean energy targets in regions with limited clean energy resources, such as Singapore. This biomass power plant will provide firm, clean, and dispatchable power to support Google's 24/7 carbon-free energy objectives. Investment and Expansion: Google operates three data centers in Singapore and has expanded its investment in the region to $5 billion. This comprehensive bill encompasses several key measures: Emergency Power Rationing: EMA will have the authority to implement power rationing as a "last resort" in emergencies where electricity supply is disrupted. This measure is designed to be temporary and lifted as soon as possible to minimize impact. Centralized Gas Procurement: The Bill proposes the creation of a regulatory regime for centralized gas procurement. This involves setting up a Central Gas Entity (CGE) to aggregate demand from power generation companies, which will help diversify energy sources and ensure sufficient gas supply. Cost Recovery: EMA will have the power to recover costs for initiatives that enhance energy security, develop competitive markets, or decarbonize the power sector. Cost recovery will be applied judiciously to ensure energy costs remain manageable. Shared Access to Critical Infrastructure: Due to Singapore's limited size, there may be instances where licensees need access to critical energy infrastructure owned by others. EMA will be able to direct such access to ensure energy security and reliability. Approval for Repurposing Assets: Owners of key electricity and gas assets will need EMA's approval before repurposing such infrastructure. This ensures that repurposing does not compromise overall energy security and system reliability. Future Energy Fund: The Bill establishes the Future Energy Fund with an initial injection of S$5 billion, aimed at supporting the adoption of low-carbon energy sources. About Green Hydrogen production by photosynthesis in Japan.(^^)/ Large-scale demonstrations are about to begin toward the practical application of artificial photosynthesis, which uses the power of sunlight to create energy and chemical raw materials from carbon dioxide (CO2) and water. Shinshu University will build one of the world's largest demonstration facilities, 30 times larger than conventional facilities, in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, in fiscal 2025. They will develop technology to mass-produce hydrogen, which is helpful for decarbonization, at low cost. The equipment will be improved to increase efficiency. The carbon material that connects the catalyst that produces hydrogen and the catalyst that produces oxygen will be devised. This will make it easier for the two types of catalysts to perform at their full potential, making it possible to create more hydrogen. Currently, the efficiency of converting light energy into hydrogen is around 1%, but the goal is to raise this to around 4%. In collaboration with Nagano Prefecture and Iida City, the hydrogen produced will be used locally as bus fuel, etc. This is one of the few research fields in which Japan is a world leader. Combining the knowledge and human resources we have accumulated is necessary to quickly prepare for practical application.
