Events and Meetups This is currently what brings the most profitable connections, and personal meetings make a much greater impact than online discussions. What is the magic in meetups? Just imagine everyone there is your potential customer—a person who provides feedback if you ask about whatever you’re doing, and true relationships start from real-life meetings. The key is that 90% of people at these meetups are your target audience. 🚨Boom! 8090 Industries portfolio company Armada led by Dan Wright and Jon Runyan lands another $40M led by Microsoft marking $100M raised to date after announcing its Series A and coming out of stealth in 2023 just 7 months ago and shares new customer partnerships with Haliburton and Skydio. 🌪 “Extreme situations like hurricanes reinforce the need for “edge” computing, the practice of processing data locally rather than sending it back to the cloud. “Lots of oil and gas companies are really very concerned about these types of disasters. You can’t have any latency. You have to be able to respond in real time.” Dan Wright, cofounder and CEO of Armada, While disaster response is the obvious application, Armada’s edge technology also has a big role to play in all sorts of remote environments where uninterrupted data access is critical. Think real-time safety monitoring at high-risk worksites, real-time emissions tracking for oil rigs, and automated operations for mines. In regards to the newly inked partnership with Microsoft: It’s a natural fit, says Pradeep Nair Armada’s founding CTO and a 10-year veteran of Microsoft’s Azure business. “If you look at all of these customers we’re hitting—oil, gas, and mining—these guys are legacy, traditional customers and Microsoft is their biggest vendor,” he says. Greatly honoured to have been invited to the Integrating Real World Tech event hosted by STABILITY at the Embassy of the United States in Singapore yesterday. We heard perspectives from Sin Yong Loh, Thorsten Neumann (龚拓思), Stacey-Ann Pearson, Pranav Mehrotra and Steffen Schacher on their and their organisations perspectives, as well of course from Klay Nichol and Juliun Brabon of STABILITY. Consensus seems to be that outside of banking where the use case is obvious, the needle is moving but slowly. Within the realm in which TNETS Global operates, i.e. that of customs and trade, where trust is paramount and risk is high, there is still a tendency to stick with what has always worked. We used to say "No-one ever got fired for choosing IBM". We probably need to update that to "No-one ever got fired for sending unencrytped pdfs attached to email." Panellists generally agreed there is a long way to go to remove exchanges of non-structured data and head towards touchless straight-through processing. The needle is moving as STABILITY are demonstrating but more patience is required with supply chain partners who sense more risk than reward in adopting some of the frictionless technologies that are proving to be stable in other fields. (The Embassy is very strict on no photo-taking so enlisted the help of AI to capture the scene perfectly!)

Singapore Trip: The ecosystem here was incredibly welcoming and supportive, and I feel fortunate to have experienced it firsthand, some notes: View on Europe Tech: When it comes to Europe, there’s a positive outlook—major outcomes and deep liquidity from private equity, secondaries, and M&A are driving optimism. Meanwhile, the sentiment around the US tech market remains very bullish, both from local LPs and companies looking to expand there quickly. Singapore as a Hub for Southeast Asia: Singapore is certainly the go-to place to launch into Southeast Asia. The country benefits from exceptional university talent and a steady influx of international professionals, drawn by the high quality of life and favourable tax policies. Regional VC Sentiment: There are challenges in the region, especially from the perspective of local LPs. The general sentiment is one of burnout in VC, primarily due to a lack of liquidity in the region. However, India stands out as a bright spot, with recent liquidity events fueling a lot of optimism for the region as many VC fund cover the Indian market from Singapore. Singapore as Country:  It’s also evident that Singapore is incredibly well-run at every level, with a strong focus on long-term investing, exemplified by innovative entities like Temsek and GIC—investing in everything from managing a VC fund of funds to owning the Singapore Zoo! It's hard to do startups, and it's even harder in SEA, when funding is currently lacking. We do need a systemic change in the way startups grow and how VCs invest. Until the tap of 'free money' opens up, it's going to be fairly dry. The expectations of return by VCs are based on the SV model, and we need to recalibrate to the environment of SEA. Hopefully, new funds that are about to launch have this in mind and not ape what SV is doing. The gap has even widened with AI plays driving the market into stratospheric region, in terms of money and valuation, one that SEA market isn't able to meet. This doesn't mean we don't have a chance, just need to really take in the last twelve years of lessons and recalibrate.
