To Pay or Not to Pay: A Meta Mystery Imagine this: your account gets hacked, someone in Vietnam runs ads in your name, and you're left holding the bill for £45. That’s where I’ve been stuck since 2021. Meta blocked the hacker (thanks!), but they also blocked me from running ads until I pay for someone else’s scam. It’s like getting fined for someone else’s parking ticket… in another country. Since then, I’ve spent countless hours chasing support, providing evidence, and now tagging Meta execs like I’m training for the LinkedIn Olympics. 🎯 So, Linkedin, help me out: 1️⃣ Pay the £45 just to move on? 2️⃣ Stand my ground and wait for Meta to see the light? 3️⃣ Pitch this saga to Netflix as "Hacked: The £45 Heist"? Which one - fast moving canggih tech or personalise human centered service? Recently, I visited a restaurant that really got me thinking. It was off-peak, nearly empty, and after a friendly greeting at the entrance, we chose our table. The staff handed us a QR code to scan for the menu, place our order and she left. Despite there being at least five staff members visible and no other customers in sight, the interaction was minimal. Now, I appreciate the convenience of technology, but as I sat there scanning the code, I couldn’t help but wonder – is this the future of customer service? Has the rapid advancement of technology caused us to lose the human touch that makes customer service truly special? Maybe I'm just too old for this but don’t get me wrong, technology certainly speeds things up. But wouldn’t it be better if we could still engage with the staff, ask for meal recommendations, and feel valued as customers? Sometimes wanna rasa like VIP juga right? Fortunately, our food was still delivered by a real person (with a smile on her face of course), but for how much longer? Some Kedai Mamak already use robots to serve out Teh Tarik! As the service industry continues to evolve, will we completely shift away from the warm, personal interactions that define customer service? I believe human touch should remain at the heart of service. After all, it’s the customers who walk through our doors that keep us in business. So amacam? should we prioritize tech or keep it personal?

"Warau Kado Niwa Fuku Kitaru" Happy Monday! This morning, it felt like my coffee was broken, and my herniated disc was acting up. I limped from the car, trying to find motivation and get ready for the day ahead. As I walked into our flagship cancer center, I was greeted by a sunny, bright lobby, friendly and upbeat staff, and light piano music playing. Then, I met a couple of cheerful cancer patients in the elevator on their way to doctor visits or chemotherapy infusions. Despite how I started my day, meeting these upbeat team members and patients was a healthy and needed reset. I am ready to attack my Monday now. Lately, I’ve been inspired by the wisdom of Japanese proverbs, perhaps because I loved reading Shogun so much. One that resonates with me is "Warau Kado Niwa Fuku Kitaru," which means "Good fortune and happiness will come to the home of those who smile." This proverb reminds us that a positive outlook can attract good fortune and happiness. I'm especially feeling this one this week. Most of the good things in my life have come from maintaining a positive outlook and finding joy in everyday moments. Small things—like a friendly greeting, a cheerful patient, or a bright lobby—can turn a challenging day around. Watching cancer patients approach their treatment with grace, humor, and positivity is incredibly inspiring. They remind me to strive for the same attitude, even when dealing with challenges like back pain or being 200 emails behind. Cindy Yeo my buddy, you have no idea how awesome you are. You’re the living proof of a 21st century way of doing things. Literally in the past 20+ years of your career, you’ve bucked the well-worn path. From your early days in Internal Medicine, to choosing a community hospital back when people had not even realised the importance of the recovery and restorative part of care. Your pioneering work in Project CARE to make possible a path for nursing home residents to fully live well and leave well. You pushing yourself to learn the “business side” of the work in private practice, and now this latest evolution to be a double-accredited specialist. All the while honing your knowledge and experience in family medicine, geriatrics and palliative care. There is a small group of doctors who have refused to rush through the training system, who have really absorbed the core of the Medicine we took an oath to do. The patients and their families are the ones who benefit. You probably don’t realise you are a role model against the bias of age, ability, and how we train and run medical careers. One small step for an individual could be an eye opener for everyone else desiring to do something different. Super proud of you for committing to this next step. You are going to be one heck of a formidable compassion palliative care specialist.

🏃‍♂️ Just finished the Income Eco Run half marathon faster than my last time, and I couldn't be prouder! Normally, I run marathons mostly for the medals—my daughter loves collecting them. But this time, it was for a better cause. The Income Eco Run is one of Southeast Asia’s most significant events championing environmental conservation. What makes it even more special is that Income Insurance will continue to match a dollar for every 1KM clocked during the run. The funds raised will go towards supporting the Singapore Green Plan 2030, in partnership with the Singapore Environment Council (SEC). Here are some of the eco-friendly initiatives that made this run truly unique: 🌱 Our running bibs were 65% smaller than usual to reduce waste. 🌱 Running t-shirts were made from 100% recycled material and were optional to purchase. 🌱 Instead of a physical medal, we received an e-certificate in recognition of our participation. 🌱 All hydration points used 100% recyclable and plastic-free cups. I'm thrilled to be part of this journey towards Zero Waste. Every kilometre truly counts! Singapore’s PM Mr. Lawrence Wong recently said this in a post: “The World Mental Health Day, on 10 Oct, reminds us that mental health is just as important as physical health. While there used to be considerable stigma attached to mental health conditions, attitudes are changing. There is now greater awareness of mental health and well-being. The Government is dedicated to improving mental health through the National Mental Health and Well-being Strategy. Employers can do their part too by supporting the mental health of their staff. This is a collective effort — let us work together to foster a more caring and inclusive environment for all.” Wonderful endorsement about the importance of Mental health indeed from the country’s highest authority. The government’s focus on mental health strategies is a commendable step in ensuring that mental health services are accessible to everyone. However, we must recognize that mental health support extends beyond policies — it starts in everyday environments, such as workplaces. Employers do indeed play a vital role in promoting mental well-being by creating inclusive, supportive workspaces. Providing mental health resources, fostering open communication, and encouraging work-life balance are key to helping employees manage stress and mental health challenges. Additionally, communities – friends and family, can contribute by normalizing conversations about mental health, reducing stigma, and offering support. As we celebrate World Mental Health Day 2024, let’s be proactive in our efforts to care for each other, ensuring that mental health is prioritized, and everyone feels valued and supported. Together, we can build a more compassionate society.

9 years of running PichaEats with Suzanne Ling, there's so much I've learnt throughout this social enterpreneurship journey. These are the 9 lessons (part 1) I'll definitely be bringing into my 10th year running Picha. 1. Too many mentors may not be the best thing You don't have to listen to every advice coming your way, they may all be good advice but they may not the right advice for you. More importantly, not every mentor comes with the right intentions, be very clear with what your goal and relationship is with the mentors so that it can be a fruitful one. Choose them wisely and most of the time, listen to your gut feeling. 2. ⁠People development should be your first agenda everyday Everyday, when you step into your office, the first thing you can do is to greet your team members. The second thing you can do is to ask "how are you?" or "how can I help you?" Yes, we want results but only by helping people to develop, we will get there. It doesn't just happen within the 4 walls of your office but every stakeholders too. That includes our drivers and chefs. 3. ⁠Choose your battles You don't need to win every argument or debate. Yes, you may be right but you don't have to prove that you're right. Energy saving is always better than draining your energy to prove a point. 4. ⁠Be ok with losses If you can't be ok with short term losses then it'll be super difficult for you to run this marathon. We have to learn to come to terms that there'll be temporary losses or investments to grow the business. More importantly, we've got to learn how to make the 1% improvements everyday. 5. ⁠Strength can be weakened and weakness can be strengthened  People always ask the question, "Should we strengthen our weaknesses or strength?". I'd say, "It's all up to you!". You choose what you want or need to strengthen and not let others tell you what to do. I thought I couldn't do operations and of course people told me that before but when there's a need, you'll always make it happen. Also when you're good at something, don't stop refining it because when we're not doing it, other people are working on theirs 10 times harder. ------------------------------------------------------------ Part 2 shall be posted the next day.
