【Temasek’s Bold $10 Billion Investment in India 🇮🇳】 -- A Strategic Move Amid China Slowdown In a move that underscores India’s growing significance on the global investment landscape, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, Temasek Holdings, has announced plans to invest $10 billion in India over the next three years. 🇨🇳 This ambitious investment comes at a time when the performance of #Chinese markets has been lackluster, underscoring #India’s importance as one of Temasek’s top two preferred markets globally, alongside the #US. 🇸🇬 Looking at Temasek's #trackrecord, it's impressive to note that they have already deployed around $37 billion in India over the past two decades.. 💡As of 2023, India now makes up 7% of Temasek’s global portfolio by underlying assets, up from 4% in 2020. In 2023 alone, they invested a record $3 billion in the country. What stands out to me is their perspective on India's market dynamics: "India has always commanded a premium due to its growth potential. By identifying and investing in the right businesses, consistently achieved returns that justify the higher valuations" "The capital markets and deal sizes in India have been steadily increasing, thanks to the expanding and maturing financial markets. The current high valuations are justified by the potential for above-average returns," Temasek’s #InvestmentStrategy in India will focus on several key areas, including technology, financial services, healthcare, and consumer goods. 🌡️ For instance, Temasek’s portfolio, Sheares Healthcare Group, healthcare investor, recently invested almost $2 billion in Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt. Ltd, Indian leading muli speciality hospital operator, with total stake of 59% (new 41%) at $4.9 billion valuation. This valuation is justified by Manipal’s strong financial performance, including 1) a revenue of around $488 million, 2) an EBITDA margin of 24% for FY 2023, 3) several millions patient as sticky customers and 4) potential for free cash flow generation. Later, they sold 8% stake to Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala while holding majority shares. Very successful story and foreseen investment. I reckon their increasing investment in India reaffirms the country's status as a pivotal destination for global investors. As someone keenly observing these developments, it's clear that India's market offers tremendous opportunities, and Temasek’s commitment only strengthens this outlook. 🌍 What will happen to capital markets in the future? 💵 And what about the more fragile (and risky) venture investment sector? According to thebell.co.kr, Venture fundraising in Korea peaked in recent years, with unprecedented liquidity flowing to startups: ₩4.08 trillion in 2019, ₩5.9047 trillion in 2020, ₩6.5023 trillion in 2021, and a record ₩6.9772 trillion in 2022. However, this figure dropped significantly to ₩5.0831 trillion in 2023 and further to ₩3.7402 trillion in 2024, returning to pre-2019 levels. Compared to the peak in 2022, nearly half of the funding has disappeared. This decline helps explain why startups are experiencing a "funding winter" and why many small to medium-sized venture capital (VC) firms are struggling to sustain operations. On the flip side, some analysts suggest that 2024 and 2025 may offer rare opportunities for "good vintages" from an investment execution perspective. An interesting article in the New York Times at the start of the year was titled: "Investors Needn't Panic Over Potential Market Turmoil." It provided a simulation analysis of how retirees who allocated $500,000 into a 60% stock and 40% bond portfolio performed as of October 31, 2024, depending on their actions during the COVID-19 period: 📗 Investor 1: Retained their investments and reinvested dividends, achieving a portfolio value of $741,670. 📘 Investor 2: Panicked and liquidated all assets on March 16, 2020, resulting in a portfolio value of $471,514. 📙 Investor 3: Panicked, liquidated on March 16, 2020, but reinvested at the end of May, achieving a portfolio value of $625,843. The article concluded: "Doing nothing is usually the wisest course of (in)action." For venture capital, particularly impact investing, this offers a similar insight. "Doing nothing" doesn't mean holding back on investments or becoming overly cautious simply because the market is in a downturn. Just as in 2024, when 63 investments were made, MYSC plans to execute at least that many in 2025. There’s no reason to panic. As the Founding Partner of TACTICAL MANAGEMENT, a Hong Kong-based private equity firm specializing in special situations, I see challenges as opportunities. In 2024, China’s economy expanded at its slowest pace since early last year, with GDP rising by 4.6% in Q3, missing the government’s 5% growth target for the second consecutive quarter. This slowdown underscores the complexity of China’s current economic landscape, marked by a flagging property market and tepid consumer confidence. Despite missing the target, recent figures have exceeded analysts’ expectations, with retail sales and factory output showing unexpected strength. The government has responded with stimulus measures, including cuts to interest and mortgage rates, as well as efforts to boost lending. While economists remain divided on whether China will meet its 5% growth goal for the year, the property sector continues to weigh heavily on the country’s recovery. For us at Tactical Management, these headwinds present unique opportunities to invest in distressed assets and underperforming sectors. As China’s central bank and financial institutions work to stabilize the market, there is potential for strategic interventions in sectors primed for a rebound, reinforcing our belief that every challenge presents an opportunity for growth.
