Getting the minutes issued and agreed in principle promptly after each board meeting cannot be emphasized too much. Directors should sign off on the chair-approved minutes within a week of the meeting to ensure accuracy and avoid forgetting important details. Official approval can wait until the next board meeting, and a signed copy of the minutes should always be kept securely as a record of the precise version that the board agreed upon. ✦ Margot Foster AM OLY ✦ reminded me about the importance of timely minutes in a post I wrote yesterday about note taking and participating in meetings. In Parliament this week, I raised some queries and suggestions about the Home Protection Scheme (HPS) under the CPF Amendment Bill 2024. As we expand HPS coverage for those with serious pre-existing health conditions, we must keep up with medical advances and ensure premiums reflect the progress of medical treatments.. I suggested: 1️⃣ Regular reviews of HPS premiums to integrate breakthroughs in medical treatments. 2️⃣ Shortening the review period for premium adjustments for those in remission. 3️⃣ Broadening the risk pool to alleviate the financial burden on high-risk individuals. 4️⃣ Introducing tiered coverage options for more flexibility and affordability. There is little that is new about the "new" cabinet in Thailand. Major portfolios remain in the same hands - finance, transport, energy, digital economy. Others like industry and commerce just switched from one individual in a party to a fellow party member. On one level, this should ease investor concerns about policy discontinuity. However, as various people have highlighted, there is a very real sense in which power distribution, rather than clear technocratic credentials, have informed who gets what. And for a lagging economy like Thailand, the lack of real change can have significant negative implications. Nevertheless, all this fussing may be for naught. Already the political wheels are turning, with a serial petitioner accusing PM Paetongtarn of being influenced by her father Thaksin. Are young workers today becoming more entitled? Andy G. Schmidt left this thoughtful reply on my post recently. And really, very few people can put this potentially contentious view in a way that's as respectful and clear as Andy did. It made me reflect. I'm sure most Singapore-based tow-kays and executives would agree that it's becoming tougher to hire, manage and retain younger workers. In part because it's become so difficult to understand them: - Their expectations of what a 'job' is - Their relationship with money and aspirations - Their exposure and savvyness with digital mediums All of these - likely different from the ones that are offering employment. Some clients tell me: "It used to be easy. Offer them more money, they do their work properly" "They show up, they don't talk back and don't melt down when you scold them" "Now they want 'work-life balance', they want so much more" "I don't get this generation" As someone who has hired many young workers, I'd like to throw my hat into the ring. My thesis is this: They aren't so different really. - They want to achieve things at work - They want to work somewhere they feel like they belong - They want to be compensated fairly (at least mark-to-market - They want to eventually be happy (without being too overworked) - They have hopes and dreams like anyone else Just that the way it's manifested is quite different from what we're used to. In part because it's so much tougher now. Their parents know this. 🔥Inflation has run rampant for years. 🔥The market is more competitive than ever. 🔥Burnout/decline in mental wellness is pervasive. In part due to new technology advancement and productivity demands. The world's moving faster than ever and it can feel hard to keep up. As a new parent, I'm concerned for my daughter in future - and I'd want her to protect herself and find the right place to work too. Yes, there will always be some bad apples that don't want to work while getting paid an obscene amount. But really, they don't represent the majority. Most just want to get by and not lose out. Some really want to outperform. So I think both sides can weigh in. Younger workers: Bring value first, before asking for more. Employers: Seek to understand them, play to their strengths and meet in the middle. Productive, engaged and reasonable young workers are not a pipe dream. But it will require a new mindset. P.S. Kudos to Andy for the thoughtful response and inspiring this post.
