Whenever I asked newly joined Life Planner of why they choose to join AIA full time, their answer is mostly about the income, the commission, the scheme and the bonus which in short, they're motivated to join because of money. Of course if I put myself in their shoes, I will answer the same thing too. But as a AIA trainer and a coach, it's part of my responsibilities to inspire them to think further. So normally after listening to their answer, my next question is always: What you plan to do with the money? There's where you started to see different answers coming out - some plan to use it to clear debt, some want to bring their parents to travel or to Umrah, some thinking to earn more to get married. That's where I will tell them that money is just a tool that helps you fulfill your dream. Keep these dreams as your goal and continue to motivate yourself that you're working hard not because of the money, but to shorten the time so that you can live with less financial headache, go travel with parent comfortably and give your loves one a memorable wedding. How much personal information should you disclose when buying insurance? Our CEO Dennis Lun was recently interviewed by Channel C about a medical insurance claim case. A son bought a Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme (VHIS) policy for his father over age 60. Within a year, the father received a stage 4 brain cancer diagnosis and filed a claim. Unfortunately, the claim was denied and the policy was eventually voided, due to alleged undisclosed medical history, including back pain. Dennis emphasised the duty of "utmost good faith" in insurance. Applicants should disclose all medical history to avoid claim denials and policy voiding, even if the undisclosed condition (such as back pain) is unrelated to the claim (brain cancer). On the other hand, Dennis recommended that insurers arrange medical check-ups for older applicants before accepting the policy to minimise future disputes. Looking Back........ How to afford stuff when your pay is low.. Working in KL and living away from your parents, meant that there would be extra costs of living to bear. I started with sharing a room with a family friend, in an apartment in Brickfields. After two months, I rented a room at a shophouse nearby. I managed to find a roommate to share the rent. Her name was Liza and she was an amazing big sister I never had. She was skillful in cooking. On some weekends, I would have cooking lessons with her. Under her bed you could find kitchen utensils and items neatly stored. I was intrigued at her collections and enquired. It appeared that she bought those items, a piece or two, at a time. That was how I learned to buy my everyday kitchenwares from 2,4,6....... When I started my part-time study, she would ensure that I have food when I got home. With sis Liza, buka puasa was a feast for me, before I left for my class. In my second year as a part-time student, I moved closer to the college, as a room was available at a shared house with my college senior. I could walk to and from class. Would you believe that the pyrex teapot 👇was bought on a six months instalments? By today's value RM75 is cheap. I had to be mindful of my expenses, more so back then. Even when I took up my first insurance plan, I had to carefully work out my finances to ensure I could sustain myself (until the next pay) less all my expenses and savings. My former roomie, the late Liza has taught me my first lesson in financial planning. It's not how much you earn, it's how well you manage your finances. Needs VS Wants. "Why aren't you belting behind?" This was the topic on 'Talking Point' at Channel News Asia (cna) this morning. It's about the risk of car passengers at the backseat, ignoring the need to put on the seat belt. Many of the people interviewed felt, it was either inconvenient or they felt safer sitting at the back. One lady with such thought, shared how she suffered from 11 broken ribs when the taxi she was travelling in, was hit by a lorry. As a result, she now walks with a limp. The importance of buckling (belting) up even if you're a back seat passenger, is akin to taking up an insurance protection while you are still healthy.
