How to best fund sustainable development and justice-related issues in the Global South? Philanthropic collaboratives are driving outsized local impact across many issues, while staying rooted in equity. That's the convincing recommendation as formulated in a compelling report by The Bridgespan Group. The report argues that collaborative funds - entities that strategically channel resources from multiple donors to nonprofits and community-based organizations - deliver outsized impact across issue areas in the Global South. Yet they remain a largely underutilized segment of the global philanthropic landscape. This has to change! The report assesses 40 collaborative funds, including some of our own strategic partners, such as Fundo Baobá para Equidade Racial, Samdhana Institute and Casa Socio-Environmental Fund, and highlights what is their unique value proposition. Three prominent and intertwined factors are featured: efficiency, effectiveness, and engagement. - First, collaborative funds are efficient ways of supporting funders with navigating due diligence, logistics, and risk. - Second, funds are effective because they are proximate to communities and build capacity. - Third, collaborative funds engage donors in a learning journey. Great new report from The Bridgespan Group. Its list of the "20 largest funders in Asia" adds to the depressingly small but slowly growing library of philanthropic research available to fund raisers in Asia. To understand the challenges philanthropic fund raisers in Asia face you only have to read Methodology section: "We relied on publicly available information, either annual reports or reports submitted to the government for compliance purposes ... In addition, we reached out to institutions known for their generous giving, but which do not publish data, to request information on their annual giving. These funders declined to share information with us ... Institutional philanthropies that do not publicly report expenditures were excluded ..." It continues: "We recognise that the annual giving reported for institutional funders likely underestimates the total giving from a source of wealth, as individuals, families, and corporates give through multiple avenues including personal gifts, CSR, other corporate foundations and/or private foundations, for which they might only publicly disclose giving for one or a few entities. After identifying a short list of the largest funders, we reached out to each of them to confirm their annual giving information. Philanthropy is a crucial aspect of overall development work, aiming for sustainable progress in society. In Vietnam, Charity has been a prominent trend when it comes to “doing good.” Charity activities often focus on urgent relief efforts and material donations for those in need. These actions tend to be short-term and may lack rigorous impact assessment. On the other hand, Vietnam's philanthropic community is becoming more diverse, with the participation of:  ▶️Semi-public or para-state organizations ▶️Nonprofits and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) ▶️Licensedcharitable/philanthropic associations  ▶️Social enterprises (SEs) and socially oriented businesses and others These organizations work in a variety of sectors, serve a wide range of beneficiaries and have longer-term goals for addressing social issues effectively. However there are still many difficulties and challenges in terms of vision, resources, support from stakeholders, lack of coordination, comprehensive information, etc. 🌱The overarching question: How can we create a robust philanthropy ecosystem (PE) that encourages full participation and collaboration among individuals and organizations? This ecosystem should prioritize sustainable development across social, economic, and scientific pillars. Earlier this year my team at PXP Sustainability partnered with Yunus Thailand to review voluntary and mandatory measures to address #plastic #pollution in all 10 #ASEAN countries. The results are in! On Thursday 12 December at Chulalongkorn University, we will be officially launching the report and publicly disclose all the data used to complete this research. At this launch event, we will also bring together guest specialists who will share their experience in designing and implementing policies to address plastic pollution and the lessons learned. Thrilled to share with you our new report on Financing of Nature-based Solutions in Southeast Asia. This study was funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Government as part of the project "Taking Deforestation out of Bank Portfolios in Emerging Markets". We take this opportunity to thank IKI for making this work possible. Five WWF offices contributed to this study (Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore) along with authors Aqeela S., Chris Moore and Jim Stephenson from Terranomics as consultants. Existing economic data and socio-economic studies on the conservation and social aspects of the projects were provided by the respective WWF teams. This was supplemented by interviews with various stakeholders and partners as well as desktop research. 📽️ New clip released in my short edu series on climate justice! This time, I dive into some of the most pressing issues: financing solutions and their impacts, as well as employment and economic justice. Financing solutions are crucial for driving the transition to clean energy - something I learnt during my short time at the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) but also through my course at Terra.do. 💁‍♀️ The finance gap within the climate space is a major issue today and requires immediate attention. Without improving access to financing solutions or offering incentives and subsidies to small businesses and individuals, the chances to transition to greener alternatives are very limited. Think about the rough conditions some women in emerging countries face while cooking, or how small farmers struggle to adopt sustainable agricultural practices due to lack of funds.💰 Another key aspect is the intersection of climate action with job creation and economic fairness. Today, more than ever, expertise is needed to build a greener and safer tomorrow, but this expertise cannot come at the expense of existing labour in today’s market. Education, upskilling, public-private partnerships, and fair transitions—among other initiatives—need to be implemented to ensure fair and inclusive access, as well as a smooth transition to greener alternatives and skills. 🤝 These are just some top-shelf thoughts on the topic. We are rapidly approaching the deadline for the #ParisAgreement, yet progress remains far from sufficient. This year's COP will be crucial for shaping future discussions on #climateaction, particularly in the realm of finance. Especially the topics such as new climate finance goals, the current international financial framework, and strategies for designing Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDC) that facilitate investment in climate-resilient infrastructure. Having recently participated in the Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD), I had the privilege to shared Indonesia's perspective on how the Ministry of Finance can play a proactive role in supporting the development, financing, and implementation of NDCs. It is disheartening to note that only 29% of respondents in a 2021 survey conducted by Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action reported actively contributing to NDC development in their countries. I shared the stage with other prominent speakers including, HE Svenja Schulze, HE Marina Silva (Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Brazil), Amar Bhattacharya and Warren Evans. The discussion at the PCD also brought to light contrasting views on the responsibilities of developed versus developing countries in financing climate action. While emerging nations advocate for greater support from historical emitters, developed countries hold a different perspective on this crucial issue. I am proud to stand in solidarity with other developing nations in advocating for a fair and inclusive approach to designing the new climate finance goals. It is imperative that the specific needs and priorities of developing countries, such as the imperative for a #justtransition, are taken into consideration in these discussions. Addressing the $1.6 trillion investment gap required to shift from brown to green energy is essential for achieving sustainable growth and climate resilience. Indonesia is committed to leading by example in mobilizing transition financing through initiatives like the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and the Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM) Country Platform. Additionally, we are actively updating our Indonesia Taxonomy for Sustainable Financing and supporting the development of the ASEAN Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance Version 2 to promote transition activities. On a global scale, Indonesia is playing a significant role in various climate forums as the Co-chair of CFMCA and actively participating in the #G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group and G20 TF-CLIMA. As we navigate the complex challenges of #climatefinance, cooperation and collaboration among nations will be paramount in achieving our shared #climategoals.
