Most discussion sessions intended for founders suck because the content is not practical/operational enough, there’s too many people in the room, or worse, someone’s trying to sell you something. To the founders that I didn't invest in: For most of you, it was the right call. You were too early. You were missing something. You were too good and/or past the stage where it makes sense to join our program. For some of you I missed a great opportunity. If that's the case, I'm sure you did just fine. The good ones always find a way. I'm sorry I missed riding alongside you. For those of you that I didn't invest in and it was the right decision, I hope you'll apply again on your next go around. Some of our best investments applied 2 or 3 times before they got it. Often I have to invest at a higher valuation because you deserve it and I wish I'd seen your potential earlier. Early stage startup investing is at least as much art (and luck) as science. Keep on building, keep on learning. Startup decks vs Business plans. It's accepted that a startup needs a deck. Dax Dasilva of Lightspeed Commerce made an important point on 20VC. Writing a business plan - including financial projections - is an important step. It requires discipline. It provides a rigorous framework for thinking deeply about the problem you're trying to solve. Harry Stebbings countered that he doesn't even want to see a deck since it's all dreams. We spent a lot of time and energy on our business plan with the expectation that we would show it to no one ever. The business plan was part of our roadmap for the company. We researched customers - including having 50+ conversations. We wanted to understand them: their background, their interests, their presence on social media. We also wanted to understand how they were evaluated by leadership and how integrated they were with the business of the company they were protecting. We researched pricing both with potential customers and other products in our industry to find out if OpEx or CapEx was a better fit. How did they buy today? How would they like to buy? We did market research to understand the verticals and map the right entry point - we were wrong but that doesn't reduce the value of the research. We looked at competitors in depth to understand what they were seeing that we weren't. Dax is right. This is an invaluable document that should be updated every year - the company is changing, the market is changing, there's more feedback about price and ICP. It's not for sharing with the outside world. It's a map for driving forward. Decks won't get you investment - VCs invest in people. We make decks but we know they don't tell our story. While some VCs may scoff at this strategy, it's actually an interesting one for emerging Southeast Asia where most of VC investing has been likened to "small- to mid-cap PE investing" (s/o to Dmitry Levit). Survival of the Fittest in a Shifting Funding Landscape Founders are adopting a low-key approach, focusing their energy on internal growth. Armed with capital secured in 2021, many are strategically revitalising their businesses. But the big question remains: What will the dealmaking landscape look like in 2024? "Overall, capital infusion will be concentrated on a narrower spectrum of companies than in all. The private capital raising landscape is anticipated to be robust, showcasing significant improvement from 2022. A recent conversation made me ponder the winding paths that innovation companies take and success in early stage investing. In 2016, along with an angel syndicate, I looked at a very early stage private, pre-revenue round in DroneShield. Sadly, after meeting the team, I passed. The CEO left a year later and CFO took over as CEO. DroneShield listed later in 2016, still pre-revenue (which probably wouldn't be supported today). For 7 years, the share price was fairly flat. Fast forward to the break out of global wars and DroneShield has benefited from massive government orders, leading it to raise >$300M in the last 12 months. It's market cap today is just under $700M, having catapulted in 2024. An entirely unpredictable series of events in 2016. Well done DroneShield and Oleg Vornik on being positioned and showing many years of tenacity. Wish I had invested :)

What do you do when you find founders who have deep experience in a traditional domain like construction tech and have spent years honing their insights in the domain. Combine that with Co-founders experience being founding engineers of giants like Rippling and spent time on building banking and fintech infrastructure at companies like Niyo. We at Neon love working with such domain experts who come together to startup. Construction tech is a domain that deserves founders like Merlin to disrupt it. As I say it can’t get better that this founding team. Joanne Chen & Jaya Gupta of Foundation Cap have a striking new thesis on how AI is going to transform the work landscape! Is AI just going to be a piece of the approx $650Bn software business? Or is AI something that will shake the landscape itself like the Internet did? The term "Software-as-Autonomous-Service" is evocative - it captures the difference between old school Software-without-AI and AI that can make decisions and do things that rule-based software might not stretch to... Individual workers within a company have autonomy to do their tasks to achieve their outcomes.. But till now software companies have only sold tools that put all the autonomy (and risk) with the buyer and user.. Can AI led software companies take on the accountability that is required to move from a tool to a service that buyers can depend on? It's already happening according to this team!
