We understand that adjusting to a new profession in a new country is an adventure that comes with its fair share of uncertainties. On Monday afternoon, we hosted the Welcome Programme for Foreign Senior Professionals, graced by Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Dr Tan See Leng. In collaboration with the Tripartite Partners - Ministry of Manpower, National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), the Singapore National Employers Federation and with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), the programme aims to provide senior executives with an in-depth understanding of Singapore’s unique tripartite approach to workforce and workplace issues. As SBF Vice-Chairman Mark Lee expressed in his welcome remarks, globalisation is not just about competition, it’s also about fostering collaboration. We recognise that these executives made the bold decision to step beyond the familiar and embrace new opportunities will not only bring value to the organisations they work with but also play a vital role in strengthening Singapore’s position as a global business hub. During the luncheon, Mark participated in a panel discussion on “Navigating Workplace Norms in Singapore” alongside fellow panellists Sim Gim Guan, Executive Director of Singapore National Employers Federation, Yeo Wan Ling, Assistant Secretary-General of National Trades Union Congress, Tan Li Sheng, Divisional Director of the Workplace Policy and Strategy Division, Ministry of Manpower. The session, moderated by Sergio Salvador of EY, focused on the spirit of Tripartism, as well as the importance of mutli-culturalism, diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. To the participants, thank you for making time to attend today’s Welcome Programme, and we hope you have enjoyed the tour of Peranakan Museum, gained valuable insights, and made meaningful connections. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Enterprise 50 Awards, our CEO Ping Soon Kok shared insights on how empowering SMEs would build a resilient business collective in uncertain times. SMEs are a significant part of Singapore’s business landscape and a vital engine for economic development, accounting for 99 per cent of businesses and employing 71 per cent of the country’s total workforce. SMEs are now entering a recovery phase after navigating the challenges of recent economic contractions. Though this positive shift reflects the sectors’ resilience, one significant hurdle is internationalisation. According to our recent National Business Survey 2024 – Scaled Internationally Edition, only 33 per cent of SMEs are familiar with the markets which they intend to expand. The demand for support is evident. This is why SBF is deeply committed to serve as advocates and provide resources, guidance, and valuable networks for SMEs as they continue to innovate, adapt and achieve global growth, reinforcing Singapore's economic vibrancy and resilience.
