"𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩𝐬" This was my message when I met with Forbes recently. The Funding Winter since 2021 is a generation reset for Venture Capital but like all market corrections- however painful, it will pass. The latest market data indicates green shoots of recovery in early 2025 (𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘚). The rest of the world will follow. If you are long on venture investing, there is no better time to start or double down. My point is directed at the fundamentals frictions that block early stage capital from getting into the innovators of today. There are many of them. For one, regulation and accreditation regimes are broken around the world imo. But it gets even more basic than that. Writing a check and being an '𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳' doesn't mean you skilled (𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦, 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦). The development path takes lots of reps (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘦) to acquire venture investing skills. To begin with, learning technical venture skills, nurturing dealflow, developing a DD framework is a massive lift. That knowledge is out there (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬) but its hard to get a coherent picture. Decision making is typically a solo endeavor with no structured support. The path to getting conviction capital deployed into tomorrow's startups today starts with education, support, and deal reps.
