Denmark 🇩🇰 has over time changed its 'radio and TV licence fee' 📻 📺 (to fund DR - Danmarks Radio 🇩🇰) into a broader 'media licence' fee 🌐, reflecting the changing way that journalism is consumed 💻 📱 Given this change, however, is the state (Skatteministeriet 🇩🇰) allowed to charge value-added tax (VAT) 🧾 on the media licence fee? A case referred by the Eastern High Court (Østre Landsret) 🇩🇰⚖️ to the Court of Justice of the European Union ⚖️🇪🇺, and Advocate General Maciej Szpunar has now delivered his Opinion. For him, yes, Denmark can charge VAT on this fee. And moreover, portions of the fee may be distributed to non-radio and non-TV broadcasters also. Dr Thomas Hansen, CTO, Circio Holding ASA and the co-discoverer of circular #RNA, is presenting more #data at #ESGCT. The data is the latest demonstration of the advantages of #circRNA over conventional #mRNA approaches. This includes over 15 times more efficacy, with even more using #machinelearning. Motorola Solutions (NYSE:MSI) has been awarded a five-year contract by the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB), starting at the beginning of 2027, to continue to manage Norway’s nationwide critical communications network, Nødnett, which is relied upon by over 60,000 first responders every day. What are the keys to being good at your work? I participated today in a greatly interesting webinar about strategic communications and comms in general. (Thank you, Valoria Oy! 🎉) Anna Lauttamus-Kauppila talked about the keys to being a professional in communications, but I believe many of them ease the work in all fields. ✨ Stay curious 🤝 Network within the company and outside These were some of my favorite takeaways, but the one that resonated most deeply with me was: Look for the new, suggest boldly, and broaden wisely. This advice encapsulates everything, especially when working in communications. Let me break down my thoughts on this: 🔍 Look for the new: There are always new tools, ways, processes, launches, projects, and people emerging. It is a priority to stay in the loop. 💡 Suggest boldly: Share your knowledge and bring your ideas to light. 🌱 Broaden wisely: Not every new tool, idea, or process should be implemented immediately. Did you know that the annual energy use for digital advertising worldwide is roughly about 112 TWh, which equals 14 Finnish Lovisa nuclear plants. (or 1 % of the global energy consumption..) 22% of all digital advertising is ad fraud, meaning that you as a buyer dont get what you are paying for. By measuring and analysing your digital advertising efforts, you could decrease the energy use 1/10 of today without losing the effecct of the campaign. Starting from 2024, big companies should report their scope 3 emissions (digtal advertising is included here), 2025 those companies with 40 mil eur turnover, 2026 those with 25 mill eur turnover... Green Ad Standard uses the first scientifically proven tools to measure the digital advertising energy consumption, and consults companies to make greener media choices, campaigns and reports. Meeting and talking with these dedicated leaders is a privilege. In these conversations, we share experiences, challenge each other, and build the optimism and determination needed to move forward. This year, our shared ambition was clear: 48 municipalities, representing more than half of Sweden’s population, now stand united in leading the climate transition. The Climate City Contract 2030 was signed – a promise to act not just for ourselves but to inspire other cities in Sweden, Europe, and beyond. What’s happening now is bigger than any one actor or city. It’s about proving that change is possible – locally, nationally, and globally. Great news fellow gaming & esports fans & sustainability torchbearers 🌲 HAVU Gaming Oy & Vattenfall's campaign The Always Good #GamingWeather (Aina on hyvä #Pelikeli) has been nominated in the European Sponsorship Association (ESA) 2025 ESA Awards shortlist! This means that HAVU & Vattenfall will be representing Finland in the annual ESA Awards in London in March 2025 🇬🇧 This is a proud moment for us at HAVU, since combining gaming and sustainability into a partnership in a way that also creates positive business and ecological results while addressing different audiences is not an easy task. Therefore we are super thankful for our collaboration with Vattenfall 🙏 Here's a short introduction to our campaign, that earned the shortlist place: "The Always Good #GamingWeather campaign combined esports and sustainability in a way that earned the 2024 SPOT Sponsorship Award of the Year in Finland. From gaming stations at festivals to a unique energy-efficient gaming computer, we did it all. The innovative content, the use of esports media channels, gaming professionals as influencers, and an impactful presence at live events raised awareness and enhanced Vattenfall’s brand perception among gamers as a forward-thinking, responsible energy provider. The 2023 campaign exceeded expectations with 3.8 million impressions, 23,000 stand visitors, and 3,800 competition entries. But it’s the real-world impact that sets this campaign apart. Based on our study, 19% of gamers said they would choose Vattenfall solely based on this cooperation. In this time period we recorded a 53% increase in new fossil-free electricity contracts from the target audience. Most importantly: these new contracts lead to approximately 930,000 kg of annual CO2 savings compared to energy produced with fossil fuels. That is equivalent to the carbon absorption of 143,000 trees in a year—a tangible contribution to more sustainable gaming." 🚀 This year’s laureates in the economic sciences – Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson – have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for a country’s prosperity. Societies with a poor rule of law and institutions that exploit the population do not generate growth or change for the better. 💡 While watching the announcement of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2024, I reflected on my doctoral thesis which reviews the evolution of central banks as powerful institutions in the international economic and financial system, from the late 19th century and the era of 'first globalisation', to the present period and particularly the great financial crisis and the subsequent sovereign debt crisis within the Euro Area; amongst other references, I draw from “Why nations fail” (Acemoglu & Robinson, 2013) mentioning the importance of policy making and advice in economics based on a careful analysis of politics and political economy. ✍️ These reflections are summarised in this article published today in the newspaper TA NEA.
