I am happy to inform that our paper on using Bayesian machine learning for extra large (XL) MIMO systems has appeared in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. For XL-MIMO systems, users start observing near-field channel with spherical wavefronts. This is unlike normal massive MIMO systems where users observe far-field channel with planar wavefronts. This paper exploits these channel aspects to improve its estimation performance. #Cell-Free #massive #MIMO (#CF-mMIMO) is in these days deeply investigated as a promising technology credited to overtake in the future more traditional multicell massive MIMO (#mMIMO) deployments. In many papers, including mine, CF-mMIMO and mMIMO are compared as standalone systems. However, it is reasonable to assume that CF-mMIMO will be gradually deployed in areas where mMIMO networks are already in place and will stay operational for a while. In the following paper, currently under review and available as an ArXiv preprint, we study the issue of cooperation and co-existence between multicell mMIMO and CF-mMIMO deployments. We examine three potential integration scenarios and compare them against a baseline multicell mMIMO system. The study presents algorithms for downlink beamforming, AP-UE association, power control, and meeting the FH requirement, conducting a comprehensive performance evaluation through extensive numerical simulations, shedding light on the performance outcomes associated with the diverse cooperation levels and the several solutions delineated in the paper. B5GPC's views on IMT-2030 use cases at the 3GPP Stage 1 Workshop on IMT2030 Use Cases: B5G Pilot Project Group (B5GPC): Focus: B5GPC is a collaborative industry group working on the development and implementation of 5G technologies. While their primary focus is 5G, they likely have a keen interest in shaping the future of 6G (IMT-2030). Possible B5GPC viewpoints on IMT-2030 use cases: Building on 5G Successes: B5GPC might have emphasized the importance of leveraging the existing momentum and successful use cases developed for 5G when defining use cases for 6G. Addressing 5G limitations: They might have highlighted areas where 5G falls short and presented use cases for IMT-2030 that address these limitations. This could include aspects like:Network capacity: IMT-2030 use cases might require significantly higher capacity to support a future with even more connected devices and data-intensive applications. Latency: B5GPC might have advocated for even lower latency in 6G to enable real-time applications that are currently not feasible with 5G. Concept of slicing in RAN 3GPP - “Network slicing allows the operator to provide dedicated logical networks with customer specific functionality, without losing the economies of scale of a common infrastructure. It allows services to be abstracted from the network resources. As such, a variety of use cases with diverging requirements can be fulfilled… Typically a set of end-user services are provided by one network slice of a mobile network operator. Some UEs can access more than one network slice simultaneously for services of more diverse* 5GPPP - A network slice is a separate logical mobile network which delivers a set of services with similar characteristics and is isolated from other network slices. Network slicing “requirements” : -The infrastructure resources should be shared across many network slices. -- Some functions may be common to more than one network slice: RAN, HSS, mobility management … - Network slices isolation NGMN - A network slice, namely “5G slice”, supports the communication service of a particular connection type with a specific way of handling the C- and U-plane for this service. To this end, a 5G slice is composed of a collection of 5G network functions and specific RAT settings that are combined together for the specific use case or business model … The intention of a 5G slice is to provide only the traffic treatment that is necessary for the use case, and avoid all other unnecessary functionality. Standards and industry cooperation -Network slicing requires collaboration between 3GPP standards and other networking organizations to work on common interfaces. This is fundamental to developing a system that is interoperable between providers, that can be built and operated using multi-vendor technology. -Network slicing also needs industries collaboration outside the standards process. One of most under looked component in network is antenna. Operators are purely looking commercials. Although its a passive item, but choosing a right antenna is important. Money saved on a wrong or low quality antenna is much much lower than money spent over the years to better the customer experience.

An Introduction to #Spectrum Consumption Models Wednesday, November 6, 2024 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT Registration Required https://lnkd.in/e2qw7dvt The continuous growth in the use of wireless services requires new approaches to the management of its key resource – the radio frequency spectrum. Modern approaches for spectrum management focus on moving away from rigid management policies and instead are embracing dynamic spectrum access (DSA) and spectrum sharing mechanisms.The implementation of several DSA and spectrum sharing mechanisms will require an effective means of communicating the characteristics and limits of spectrum use of an RF transmitter, receiver, system, or collection of systems in order to handle and manage RF interference. Spectrum consumption models (SCMs) as defined by the IEEE 1900.5.2 standard, provide an information model to capture the spectral, spatial, and temporal characteristics, and boundaries of the use of spectrum by any specific transmitter or receiver device or RF system.  Additionally, the standard defines the criteria to arbitrate compatibility among combinations of RF devices and/or systems that have expressed the boundaries of their spectrum use with SCMs. SCMs built in accordance with IEEE 1900.5.2 allow spectrum users to describe their anticipated use of spectrum so that the various stakeholders can understand and resolve conflicts enabling key processes for the management of Dynamic Spectrum Access and spectrum sharing. SCMs are ideal for users to negotiate boundaries for spectrum sharing and spectrum trading. Their modeling methods were designed to make compatibility computations tractable and so SCMs enable the creation of algorithms to optimize the use of spectrum across multiple users. SCMs are machine readable and can be used to provide spectrum use policy to spectrum dependent systems (SDSs) for autonomous selection of RF channels and/or collaboration in the use of shared spectrum. This presentation will introduce attendees to the IEEE 1900.5.2 Standard for Modeling Spectrum Consumption. It will cover the motivation for using SCMs and their role in dynamic spectrum access and spectrum management and provide an understanding of how compatibility of SCMs is arbitrated and can be used to conceive of algorithms that automate spectrum management and dynamic spectrum access tasks

As shown in the diagram, an LNA is typically placed between the antenna and the receiver. It receives the incoming signal, amplifies it, and then passes it on to the receiver for further processing. The key to an LNA's effectiveness is its ability to minimize its own noise contribution. Discrepancies in energy efficiency metrics throughout the mobile #telecommunications industry Recent #research work has shown how 3GPP, International Telecommunication Union, ETSI , GSMA, and NGMN Alliance each use different and disparate #energy #efficiency #metrics for quantifying energy #efficiency in #cellular #mobile #radio #networks. This recently submitted work, done in conjunction with Nicola Piovesan and Antonio De Domenico of Huawei and my graduate students Mingjun YING and Dipankar Shakya at New York University and NYU WIRELESS NYU WIRELESS reveals how current #kpi’s and #kvi’s for #power efficiency often give #wireless #communications #carriers misleading results for determining #optimal #sustainability decisions in their network #design and #operations. In this detailed, comprehensive paper submitted to IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society , we show how #wastefactor and #wastefigure are able to unify the disparate energy efficiency metrics used by today’s #cellphone providers. As shown in this paper, we believe a #fundamental misunderstanding of #energyefficiency is partially to blame for the slow rollout of #5G and #6G. Technology-neutral licensing or Technology-neutrality (commonly known as spectrum refarming) is the ability to refarm spectrum used for legacy networks (#2G and #3G) for #4G and #5G services, at a pace driven by market demand. In general terms, technology neutrality refers to the repurposing of spectrum bands to more efficient technologies. Technology neutrality is an important enabler of legacy network sunsets. The initial rollout of 4G in many pioneer markets was based on technology neutrality and spectrum refarming. As of the middle of the last decade, nearly half of 4G deployments globally were running on refarmed 2G and 3G spectrum. Between 2015 and mid-August 2023, a total of 91 networks were shut down, of which 43 were 2G networks and 48 were 3G networks. At least 148 networks will be shut down between Q4 2023 and 2030, based on announced plans from operators.

There's been an interesting update from Telecom Infra Project who's partnering with VIAVI Solutions to expand the testing capabilities of the Viavi Automated Lab-as-a-Service for Open RAN (VALOR). VALOR is the result of a $21.7 million grant from the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (PWSCIF). This announcement is welcome news for TIP, who previously contributed comments on how the NTIA could structure and administer grants, as well as submitting its own grant applications. And while TIP’s own funding submissions were ultimately unsuccessful, this development highlights the organisation’s significant role in the industry.
