FESTINA LENTE - Think slow, act fast Money moves the world and delivery of projects is how we measure success. Often, decision makers want to start digging and cutting ribbons so they can show progress on their projects. Bent Flyvbjerg captivates the reader with his extensive experience of studying and implementing larger projects, from nuclear power plants, high speed rail to IT projects. The 7 learnings summed up for you: 1. There is bias towards planning. It is not considered work. 2. Politics plays a role in underestimates the costs and timelines to get the project approved. 3. When things go wrong, and they will, you need to know: Who has power and who doesn’t? What are the interests and agendas? Who you need on your side? 4. Ask questions before you state answers. It’s starting with why and knowing what the project goals is, then filling in the blanks on how. This should be visible to everyone working on the project throughout. 5. Embrace Maximum Virtual product - analyse, tinker, imagine. It is much cheaper to fail on the drawing board and by using experiri (origin word for experiment and experience) you can try, test, improve towards the best possible outcome and process. 6. You need experience - experienced leader with skilled intuition, well oiled delivery team that knows how to overcome challenges, mitigate risks and decrease probabilities of black swan events (your one of hurricane disaster) 7. No one is unique - when planning your project use reference class forecasting. Simply find a category where your project falls in, if it’s house renovation or new digital product, collect data on budget, process, timelines and use them as a reference for planning your own. Surprisingly, when you talk to experienced book writers they will tell you it takes 7 years to write a book, even if you think that you can do it in 1.

I think we’ve all been asked to do more with less professionally and/or personally over the last couple of years - here’s a fascinating talk on building to constraints from a modern developer who revisited his youth to squeeze everything out of a 1980’s Amiga 500. 2 key takeouts for mine which are equally as applicable to modern solution design: 🗜️ If you have unspecified or unclear constraints, set some. It accelerates quantification and qualification and mitigates the risk of unforeseen downstream constraints. 🧯 If you’re in need of lean, rapid results, it’s OK to build for a specific scenario. Sure, it’s elegant to design for re-use, but if your house is burning down, it’s not the time to be shopping around for a refillable extinguisher. The Power of Flow! Yesterday I took a road trip with Marcus Thenander, Denis Velevski, Rasmus Wallberg, Jacob Hell to Hogia Group in Stenungsund to meet none other than Woody Zuill. He's the guy you gotta meet at least once in your life, the godfather of software teaming (mob programming) and has such wonderful points to prove when it comes to successful software development. Woody was sharing findings around Flow, the thing that gets us to where we want to go and fast, and what allows us to have Flow in our day-to-day work, working together and alone when needed. One question he answered for me was how to deal with people who want to work alone, and he shared with us that everybody needs to get better at working collaboratively and that this industry suffers too much from waste from people who struggle to work in any setting than alone. Otherwise, we're doomed. (love the dramatic choice of words!) I'm planning a meetup around end of May if all stars align, please be on the lookout for it if you think mob programming sounds interesting to you to try out! More images in the thread 🧵

The curtains have closed on WWDC24, and what a blast it was! 💣 For those who couldn't catch it, here's a rundown of the key highlights: Siri: It's now equipped to understand speech errors, supports contextual dialogues, can execute text commands, and has comprehensive knowledge of all OS features to assist you efficiently. The language model is adept at generating and refining content, organizing and summarizing notifications/emails, automating data completion, providing preset quick responses, and conducting background searches, among other tasks. The Image Playground app now boasts built-in picture generation capabilities, albeit with some compromises in quality. Users can generate portraits in the Lensa style, create "Genmoji" emojis, remove objects from photos, and more—all directly on their device. Apple's introduction of "Personal Claude Compute" for cloud-based operations aims to mitigate privacy concerns. They assure users that data won't be stored in the cloud, and emphasize the cloud's usage solely for computing and inference purposes. The assistant's learning process encompasses insights from all devices and applications. macOS now enables seamless control of iPhones from Mac devices, allowing users not only to view screen content but also to manipulate their phones using mouse and keyboard via iPhone Mirroring. Liberating Structures practical course - 25/10 Crowd Sourcing When you are in a situation where there are lots of ideas how do you order them? Well, there are many techniques on how to order ideas - weighted score, average, democratic voting, weighted voting, faked voting (as winners are already known), etc. There is one fun technique though, that allows for 5 rounds of voting with randomizing the process of passing ideas around and then ordering ideas on a scale from 25 to a minimum of 5 points, though most of the times all ideas are ordered somewhere around the score of 18/17. You can also decide to stop counting below the score of 20 - well, if people do not think that something is clever then why you should bother? How can success become a problem? When customers roll in and the tech cannot keep up... Companies becoming victims of their success is a popular issue among things I deal with. Quite often it means I have to deal with "snowflakes" - servers and codebases so fragile that nobody dares to touch them. Preventing "getting there" is really hard - because most businesses start with solutions that are created with limited budgets and often without any strategic insights. Because of that they often end up in the "snowflake city". Once they have a product-market-fit - customers storm the company. Scaling problems and system limitations emerge. What happens next is usually a very reactive process of fixing and creating additional layers on already existing systems. This can go on for years. And there you have it - the snowflake is ready! How to deal with it? You can do it only if you identify it, and you can identify it if you monitor the situation. Each IT system ("a website") has a limit (capacity) - therefore make sure that whoever is developing/maintaining your system in the early stage can access the number of customers/transactions, so that they get reminded that monitoring is a must. Correlating "IT vitals" with "business vitals" gives great insights and allows to predict certain behaviors (like traffic spikes vs seasonal sales for example). In general: try to shift your focus from "reactive fixes" to "proactive actions". This might require rewrites, refactorings and other seemingly "expensive things", but that will save you from paying a much larger bill later. You don't have to ditch your current partners in order to avoid this problem (although sometimes it might be necessary). The idea of a CTO on-demand or "fractional" is to come with the extra knowledge and experience when needed, and only as needed. I dropped a nice link in the comments to one of my videos where I talk about "melting snowflakes", i.e. cleaning up after things went bad. Sometimes "a few seemingly expensive hours" can save you from a cavalcade of tasks...

Yes, this is a shame of the tax system, not only in Norway, but there's hope. Instead of thinking how unfair this taxation is on a given example of a business going bust straight after being taxed 30% - consider going bust before exit and selling all the assets at fire sale price to an entity abroad. Surely, being taxed 30% on exit is unfair but not as painful - if you sell the business for a fraction of its value before exiting (plus any liquidation costs you chose yourself). It is a game, where new taxes are being invented every year and loopholes are being closed every month. Still enterpreneurs must also play this game. We can be smarter and run in front of the pack. Surely if we can outsmart the status quo of a market, we should be able to outsmart oppresive systems. Don't say "just don't come to Norway". Promote "just don't pay unfair taxes" #norway #taxation
