In the year 2021, plans wur pit oot for the renovation an expansion o the station, as pairt o Serbia’s government ettles tae revitalise an modernise the rail infrastructure in the kintra, includin the introduction o high-speed trains.[1] The renovation includit upgrades tae the lines, the biggin o a new platform, an a complete overhaul o the main biggin wi additional lifts for the disabled. Wirk began in September 2021.[2]

As a condition fur the upgrade, the Bosko Perosevic Brig wis demolished, an the Žeželj Railway Brig wis rebiggit, based on the projeck bi Aleksandar Bojović, duin bi the international consortium JV Azvi - Taddei - Horta Coslada International. The renovated station biggin wis appent on 19 Mairch 2022, wi the new line allooin speeds o up tae 200 km/h atween Belgrade an Novi Sad.[4]

On 1 November 2024, aroond 11:50, the shelter ower the main entrance tae the Novi Sad railway station fell doun. In the mishanter, 14 folk lost their lives, includin a six-year-auld boy, an three folk wur hurt.[5]

Civil ingineer Danijel Dašić said that the shelter cam doun acause o an extra steel frame o gless panels that wis addit durin the renovation.[6]

The Government o Serbia declared 2 November 2024 as a day o mournin, whiles Novi Sad declared three day o mournin.[7] The Republika Srpska also declared a day o mournin.[8]

The President o Hungary, Viktor Orbán, expressed condolences tae Serbia an the faimiles o the victims.[9]

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić cried oot for political an criminal responsibility cur the mishanter.[10] The Chinese consortium that did the renovation said that the shelter wisnae part o the renovation.[11]
