Noxious, invasive weeds are a nuisance to everyone. They threaten the economic livelihood of agricultural and timber producers, displace wildlife and wildlife habitat, and destroy threatened and endangered species that are part of the natural heritage of this country. Cogongrass [Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv.], smutgrass [Sporobolus indicus (L.) Br.] and knotroot foxtail [Setaria geniculata (Lam.) Beauv.] are all three such noxious weeds. Knotroot foxtail and smutgrass are two of the most common, troublesome grasses in the Southeastern United States, with cogongrass being listed as one of the most troublesome weeds in the world.
