V2603. MISRA. The 'static' keyword shall not be used between [] in the declaration of an array parameter.

Jul 19 2021

This diagnostic rule is based on the MISRA (Motor Industry Software Reliability Association) manual for software development.

This rule only applies to C. You shouldn't use the 'static' keyword to precede the value that defines the size of an array accepted by a function, as this keyword may be ignored. The keyword is only an indication to the compiler. On the basis of that indication the compiler can generate more efficient code.

Example:

void add(int left[static 10], int right[static 10])
{
  for(size_t i = 0U; i < 10U; ++i)
  {
    left[i] += right[i];
  }
}

extern int data1[10];
extern int data2[20];
extern int data3[5];

void foo(void)
{
  add(data1, data2);
  add(data1, data3);
}

The 'add' function is called several times in code. The formal parameters of this function are two arrays of at least 10 elements in size. The second function call will lead to undefined behavior since the actual array size (5) is less than expected (10).

This diagnostic is classified as:
