Some weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend Extracellular Vesicles in Clinical Applications - EVCA’s final meeting. Sort of a bittersweet moment.
A bit of context: I attended EVCA’s kick-off meeting just two weeks after starting my PhD. Back then, I didn’t know much about extracellular vesicles (EVs), but I was excited to begin my journey in this cool field. It’s incredible to see how much has changed since then and how much I have grown both as a scientist and as a person.
EVCA has been like the godmother of my PhD journey. It gave me the space to present project ideas and engage in fruitful discussions with EVs experts. It was during an EVCA meeting that I first shared the idea for our bioinformatics tool, EV-Net, even before we secured funding to develop it in collaboration with Anaïs Baudot.
Now, in my (hopefully) final year of my PhD, I had the chance to present this journey during the EVCA meeting. My talk focused less on the technical details of the tool and more on the roadmap, from the initial project idea to execution and dissemination, highlighting EVCA’s support along the way. It was well received, and we are currently discussing the possibility of giving an EV-Net workshop for potential users at a partner lab.
EVCA also supported my attendance at international conferences that had a significant impact on my career. Thanks to EVCA, I attended RECOMB 2024 in Cambridge and ISEV2025 in Vienna. At ISEV2025, I presented a preliminary version of EV-Net and connected with potential users. Also, I had the chance to meet my ISEV mentor, Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke, in person.
During the final EVCA meeting I had many enriching discussions about EV research and life as scientists. I will miss EVCA, but I’m sure that its impact on me as a person and the connections I’ve made will last a lifetime. Thank you Rune Matthiesen, Ana Maria Aransay, Felix Elortza, Juan Manuel Falcon Perez, Marca Wauben and Graça Raposo for the discussions and I hope to see you again in future EV initiatives!
P.S. I realized I took a little break from LinkedIn since last year without really noticing, but I’m back :D I’ll try to post more regularly because I genuinely enjoy sharing and connecting here.
