Fourteen hard-fought battles accounted for the majority of valiant lives lost on both the Union and Confederate sides of the war. Though there were many individual battles in the Civil War, these specific battles captured the essence of the bloody dispute that shook the very foundation of America and had much to do with the formation of the young and reconsolidated United States nation that resulted.
