It was written just after the 2016 US presidential election on the heels of Brexit. Relations with Russia were turning volatile and North Korea's saber-rattling with nuclear missiles appeared to be a real threat. America seemed to be moving backwards and in some cases to the extreme right. This is the most political Cyborg Asylum has been in a song, questioning the reckless decisions made by world leaders. From John: The concept behind "Paradigm Shift" is pretty simple. Beginning in mid-2016 the world experienced a political shift in which generally accepted norms no longer applied. This song is an expression of that shift set within the Cyborg Asylum universe. I completed the lyrics to this song in an airport in Sri Lanka on my way to Kuwait.
