Jan is eleven years old like Leo, but has to fend for himself because his single father works in northern Germany and is therefore away from home for weeks at a time. Leo's mother, Helena, who works for the youth welfare office, wants to place Jan with a foster family. But the boy runs away from her. Jan has a kitten - "Socke" - and he doesn't want to leave it alone. Socke is a stray, shy and stubborn, and rarely comes home.
