He chafes under the thumb of his department head, hates his marriage, but doesn't have have the willpower left to change anything. In a nearly nearly suicidal impulse, he tries to stop a knife wielding thug from robbing his condo. The violent encounter leaves him fighting for life, and moments of returned clarity and new insight in his science. When insight fades, he seeks more dangerous encounters and is soon entangled in the seamy underbelly of the city. He encounters a young female accountant to the local drug king, who is more insightful than his students, her not-so-bright underworld lover, and their gang, and embarks on a shocking road trip with them that just might bring about the end of the universe.
