A loud, persistent rattling noise robs station chief Girwidz and his wife of their sleep. Outraged, Girwidz wakes up his colleagues Hubert and Staller, and the two have to go with him in the middle of the night to search for the source of the noise. It's quickly found: a nearby printing shop is droning away in the middle of the night. Something seems amiss. And indeed, the three police officers discover the owner of the printing shop, Lothar Marthaler, lying lifeless in front of a running printing press. An accident? Not at all: A murder that was meant to look like an accident. Pathologist Dr. Anja Licht discovers that Marthaler was knocked down. He then died from the fumes of a solvent that the murderer had poured next to him. Not many suspects from the company come into question. With the exception of secretary Carina Bacher and Marthaler's designated successor, Sebastian Kirchner, all employees are on vacation. Searching for a Motive During their investigation, Hubert and Staller learn that Marthaler must have been a strict boss who, despite his age, had no intention of quitting. Year after year, he put Kirchner off, saying he would hand over the company to him. Had Kirchner been unable to stand it any longer and killed Marthaler to finally succeed him? Hubert and Staller also target former employee Jörg Lange. He was fired for theft and makes no secret of his dislike for his former boss. Did Lange kill Marthaler out of revenge? When the two police officers finally find a very mysterious scrap of paper, the case takes a surprising turn. Suddenly, everything looks as if shady deals were being made at the printing company. Perhaps Lothar Marthaler was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Written by ARD Das Erste See less
