Four years later, he fled with his mother and sister to Sweden. He came to be one of Swedish music's absolute greatest, with the music for "Emil i Lönneberga" and "Pippi Långstrump" perhaps the most famous. He has the most registered works on STIM (Svenska Tonsättares Internationella Musikbyrå).
