The films document the uniqueness of the Arctic world: its magic, its wealth and the international hunt for mineral resources. Huge quantities of sought-after raw materials are stored under the ice of the Arctic, and there are always new reports of fabulous treasures under the ice: ore, oil, natural gas, rare soils, precious metals and elements such as nickel. They are being searched for everywhere in the Arctic, despite the cold and storms. The melting of the ice could make mining easier in the future. At the same time, the exploitation of resources is linked to the over-exploitation of nature. There is hardly any other place where this is as evident as in Norilsk. The nickel mines in northern Russia are among the world's biggest destroyers of the environment. The city of Norilsk, with its 170,000 inhabitants, is still a restricted area and a target of protests because of the environmental pollution caused by the nickel and copper mines and metal smelting. "The Arctic - 66.5 degrees North" accompanies a small search party of raw material geologists from Australia.
