When he finds a battered Superman action figure in the rain, we get a glimpse of his interior life, which is far more heroic and mysterious than what he shows to the outside world. When a young girl in the store clutches her own broken toy, the clerk sees a chance to help her, and by helping her, realizes he can be the hero he never had in his life.
