Normally a social outcast, he then sets out to accomplish all of the things in his life he missed out on, like talking to the girl he likes, and standing up to his high school bully. This takes him down a dark/psychological path about reaching out for what you want and abandoning all hope for personal gain. This is all too apparent when Simon is confronted by the most antagonistic thing in his young life; his high school bully. The stakes get higher when neither of the two are willing to back down, even as things turn violent.
