He barely suffered witnessing the harsh flogging regime of his hard-line Tory host, captain Fitzroy, but stumbled upon evidence for his theory of evolution. Despite initial scientific acclaim, realizing the theological implication Genesis isn't literally true made him wait 20 years, after the loss of a daughter which made him question his Christian faith, when another could have beaten him to the post, to publish his On the Origin of Species.
