He is no sooner alone than he produces a pencil from the cigar stump and sheets of paper in an equally ingenious mariner, and writes a note to his female accomplice telling her to have dinner ready for he will be free in two hours. This he slips in the hat of a visitor and the lady outside obtains possession by jerking his hat off. Raffles, by means of a piece of wire, has obtained possession of an order of release and also the imprint on his palm of the magistrate's signature. Back in his cell, he transfers the latter to the form. An officer is invited to drink wine and is rendered unconscious by the powder Raffles slips into it from a hollow ring. With the form the cracksman easily gets free, and though Garimard gets on his track he tricks him by forcing him at the revolver's point to exit by the window out of which he has arranged to drive Raffles, so that he is seized and carried off by his own men in the darkness.
