After parking his car and entering a guarded house, he scans his options after briefly examining a warm corpse riddled with multiple knife wounds. He finds several clues, first a phone number on the back of a matchbook in the victims shirt pocket, then a train ticket left by the deceased man's wife, and then one suspect - a nervous neighbor. But the clues and the suspect turn out to be red herrings, as we see through a myriad of periodic flashbacks, culminating in the ultimate murder scene, committed by an unsuspecting killer.
