Her son turns his back on the GDR in those days. Frustrated by the eternal talk of the alleged superiority of socialist society, he wants to get away from the dreariness and eternal grayness of everyday life. He had also accused his mother of not wanting to understand what the situation was really like under real socialism. The departure of her son weighs heavily on the teacher. But that's not all, because in these days and months there are also major contradictions between the teachers and the pupils. Old values suddenly disappear, recurring slogans prove to be nonsensical and belong to the past. Christine Rautmann feels like an "outsider", she can no longer reach her pupils. But what should she say to the pupils when she herself is a seeker in the new circumstances? Some pupils are already leaving class in confusion and avoiding school. Mrs. Rautmann stands before the ruins of her work as an educator. In the eyes of her pupils, she has failed twice over: as a teacher and as the mother of a son who left the GDR. What is important to her in these times of fundamental change are people who stand by her side and give her support. For example, her friend Erika, an energetic person.
