Julia insists on free choice and accompanies the girl to visit the convent, which spells years of intake but she's not daunted. Curate Tonio Niederegger is less supportive, as his own vocation is in doubt given his strong romantic feelings, while the diocese reform forces him to absorb a neighboring parish where his colleague already left the clergy for love. Tonio leans on administratively competent lay assistant Maja Fricke, who considers celibate outdated. Julia concentrates on her lover, Dr. Felix Born, also to her family's taste.
