But her plan backfires when Sammie and John clash over birthday cake, forcing John to ask for Sammie to be sent to her dad's house for the weekend. Meantime, the stress from being a third wheel results in hearing loss for Sammie, and no matter how hard she tries she can not get Karen to either notice or care. But when Sammie locks herself in John's bathroom, Karen discovers that the girl has used a pair of tweezers to try and clear the blockage in her ears.
